Kathakali is Kerala’s classical story-theatre: no speech, everything carried by facial expression, hand gesture and eye movement, in elaborate make-up and costume. Fort Kochi has several venues staging shortened evening performances for visitors, and the reason to arrive early is the make-up — applied in front of the audience, and for many people the more memorable half.
