Kenya
Big-cat country and the original safari. Kenya pairs the Mara plains and Amboseli’s elephants beneath Kilimanjaro with the Rift Valley lakes and a Swahili coast — an easy first Africa from India.
Why Kenya
Kenya is where the safari was invented, and it still does it better than almost anywhere. The Masai Mara holds one of the highest concentrations of big cats in Africa; Amboseli puts elephant herds against Kilimanjaro; the Rift Valley lakes bring flamingos and rhino within a morning’s drive of each other.
It is also unusually easy from India. There are direct flights from Mumbai, English is widely spoken, the parks are connected by short light-aircraft hops rather than long drives, and a week is genuinely enough to see the country at its best.

5 ways into Kenya — drawn from this guide, not from a list that could describe anywhere.
The classic safari · Safari and coast · Migration-focused · Family safari — the shapes of trip Kenya suits, and the one you pick changes where you go and when.
The density · The variety · The access · The people — what this country does that its neighbours do not, and the reason to choose it over them.
June – October is the strongest window — long dry season. The rest of the year splits into January – February · March – May · November – December, and they are not interchangeable.
Light aircraft · Road transfers · In the parks — how people actually move around here, which decides how much of the map a trip can hold.
eTA — applied online. Indian passport holders need an approved eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) before travelling to Kenya.
Kenya Visa — What You Need to Know
Indian passport holders need an approved eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) before travelling to Kenya. It is applied for online in advance — there is no visa on arrival.
Kenya replaced its visa system with the eTA, and every visitor now applies online before departure rather than on arrival. Apply well ahead of travel, and carry your approval with your travel documents. Requirements, fees and processing times are set by Kenyan immigration and change without notice.
The eTA is applied for online in advance and must be approved before departure. Airlines check it at boarding, so leave time for processing rather than applying at the last moment.
Yellow fever certification is a recurring requirement on Africa routes, and India applies its own rules to travellers arriving from certain countries. Confirm what is required for both your entry to Kenya and your return to India with an authorised vaccination centre well before travel.
For all Kenya journeys we design, we prepare your complete visa documentation package — the forms, the supporting documents, the sequence of submission. Our visa specialists help travellers prepare complete applications with careful document guidance. Final visa decisions always remain with the relevant authorities.
Entry rules, eTA requirements, fees and health certification can change without notice. Verify the current position with the official Kenyan eTA portal and the Kenyan High Commission before booking and again before departure.
Meeting every published requirement does not guarantee that a visa is issued. Each application is assessed on its own merits by the relevant authority, which may request further documents or refuse an application without giving reasons. Live Traveller can prepare and check your documentation, but no agent or operator can promise an outcome — and you should treat anyone who does with caution. Book refundable arrangements until your visa is in hand.
Kenya, practically
A safari runs on early mornings and other people’s expertise. Most of what makes it go well is small.
Kenya questions
How people do Kenya
Most Kenya journeys are built from the same few blocks. The difference is how many parks you take on, and how much time you give each one.
Nairobi, then two or three parks — most often Amboseli, a Rift Valley lake and the Masai Mara — linked by light aircraft.
The same safari, followed by the Indian Ocean at Diani or Watamu — early starts first, then nothing scheduled at all.
Weighted heavily towards the Mara during the months the herds are usually in the ecosystem, with more time in fewer places.
Shorter drives, camps that accept children, and a pace that leaves the middle of the day free.
Tell us your month and your nights, and our travel designers will match the parks to the season.
How far ahead to book
Kenya’s good camps are small — often under a dozen tents — so availability, not price, is usually what decides a trip. The high season books out first and by a wide margin.
Decide between the June–October peak and the quieter January–February window. It drives everything else, including cost.
Two or three parks in a week, not four. The commonest mistake is adding a destination and losing the game drives to travel.
Camp space is the binding constraint. Once the route is agreed, availability is confirmed before anything else is arranged.
International and light-aircraft seats are booked together, and the eTA is applied for well before departure.
A travel-clinic appointment for malaria and vaccination advice, then the packing list — soft bag, layers, binoculars.
What to take on safari
Safari packing is unusually specific, and the constraint is the light aircraft: a soft bag, and less than you think.
Soft-sided luggage only. Scheduled light aircraft between the parks limit both weight and shape, and a hard case may not be accepted at check-in.
