When to go

When is your Ireland?

Summer
June – August
Long Light

The warmest months and by far the longest days — light lingers past ten in the evening in June, which effectively gives you an extra half-day for driving and walking. Everything is open, ferries to the islands run reliably, and it is the busiest and priciest season.

Shoulder
May · September
The Sweet Spot

Long days without peak crowds or peak prices, gorse and hedgerows in flower in May, and September often the driest and most settled month of the year. Island ferries and most attractions are still running. If you have a free choice, take these.

Autumn
October
Quiet and Atmospheric

Colour in Killarney and Wicklow, empty coastal roads and low prices. Daylight shortens quickly, Atlantic storms become more frequent, and some island ferries and rural attractions begin to reduce or close for the season.

Winter
November – March
Short Days, Big Weather

Mild rather than cold but dark by half past four, with genuine Atlantic storms on the west coast. Dublin, Cork and Galway stay lively and cheap, and St Patrick's Day in March is a national event — but a driving tour of the west is not the trip to plan for these months.

Irish visa — what you need to know

Ireland is in the European Union but it is not in the Schengen area, and it runs its own visa system. A Schengen visa does not admit you to Ireland. Indian passport holders need an Irish visa — and the timeline is far longer than for the Schengen countries, which is the single most important thing on this page.

Fee and processing, as the Irish authorities publish them Irish Immigration Service Delivery publishes visa fees of €60 for single entry, €100 for multi entry and €25 for transit, and states the fee cannot be refunded if the application is refused or withdrawn; additional document-submission charges may apply and some categories are exempt. The Embassy of Ireland in India publishes indicative processing times by category — a visit application at six to eight weeks, business, conference or event at four weeks, and study at four to eight weeks — while stating these are not guaranteed and that some applications take longer. Crucially, processing time runs from the date of receipt in the Embassy rather than the date of lodgement at the visa application centre, and the Embassy asks applicants to add two-way document transit times on top. It advises applying up to ninety days before travel. Fees and timeframes are set by the authorities and change — confirm both when you apply. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes, and it is not a Schengen visa. Ireland is in the European Union but outside the Schengen area and operates its own visa system, so a Schengen visa does not admit you. Indian passport holders apply for an Irish short stay "C" visit visa, which allows up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism, visiting family or friends, study, marriage or medical treatment. It does not permit work of any kind, paid or unpaid, or the use of publicly funded services. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.
Far longer than a Schengen visa, and this is the most important planning fact for Ireland. The Embassy of Ireland in India publishes a visit application at six to eight weeks, against roughly fifteen days for most Schengen countries, and states that times are not guaranteed and some applications take longer. Two details extend it further: processing starts from the date of receipt in the Embassy, not the date you lodge at the visa application centre, and the Embassy asks you to add two-way document transit on top. Apply two to three months ahead.
AVATS is the Irish online visa application facility and every applicant must use it. It generates an Application Summary Form which you sign, date and submit together with your supporting documents and fee — and the documents must be submitted within thirty days of creating the AVATS application. Applicants resident in India then attend a VFS centre in person to give biometrics. Applications lodged at the Delhi centre reach the Embassy the next working day.
Possibly, and it is worth checking before paying for a separate application. Under the British and Irish Visa Scheme and the Short Stay Visa Waiver Programme, some Indian passport holders who hold an appropriate UK visitor visa and enter the UK as a visitor can travel onwards to Ireland without a separate Irish visa, while within a valid period of leave to remain in the UK. There is a firm limit: the Embassy states the schemes are not open to Indian nationals resident in the UK, even with valid visitor visas — only to those who arrived in the UK as short stay visitors.
Irish Immigration Service Delivery publishes the fees as €60 for single entry, €100 for multi entry and €25 for transit. The fee cannot be refunded if your application is refused or withdrawn, so it is worth submitting a complete and consistent application rather than a hurried one. Additional charges may apply for submitting your documents, and some categories of applicant are exempt from the fee altogether.
No — not without separate UK permission. The Giant's Causeway and Belfast are in Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom rather than the Republic of Ireland, and an Irish visa gives you no right to enter the UK. The land border is open and unmarked, so it is easy to cross without realising, but the legal position is unchanged. If Northern Ireland is on your itinerary, arrange UK permission before you travel.
For the west, effectively yes. Rail radiates from Dublin and is fine between cities, but it does not reach the coastal scenery, and rural bus services are thin — particularly on Sundays and out of season. You will be driving on the left on narrow, hedged roads where journeys take considerably longer than the distances suggest. Book early if you need an automatic; they are scarce in Ireland and expensive.
May and September are the sweet spot — long daylight, most attractions and island ferries running, and noticeably lower prices and crowds than midsummer. September is often the driest and most settled month. June to August has the longest days, with light past ten in the evening, but is the busiest and priciest. October to April is cheap and atmospheric in the cities, though short daylight and seasonal closures make a western driving tour much harder.
