When to go

When is your Australia?

Shoulder
Mar – May · Sep – Nov
Autumn and Spring

The best all-round months. Sydney and Melbourne are warm without being hot, the Reef is calm, and the desert is comfortable. Spring brings whales along the east coast, wildflowers in Western Australia and jacarandas in Sydney around October and November. Diwali falls squarely in this window.

The North
June – September
The Dry Season

The only comfortable time for the Top End and the Kimberley, and the best time for Cairns, the Reef and Uluru — clear, dry and cool at night. This is the Indian summer holiday, which is why May and June work so well for families heading north. Sydney and Melbourne are cool and grey; Melbourne can be cold.

Summer
December – February
Beaches and Fireworks

The southern cities at their best: Sydney's beaches, New Year's Eve fireworks over the harbour, the Australian Open in Melbourne in January, and Tasmania at its warmest. The tropical north is hot, humid and wet, with stingers in the sea, so it is the wrong time for Cairns and Darwin. Uluru is very hot.

Winter
June – August
The Southern Winter

Cool in Sydney, cold in Melbourne and Tasmania, with snow in the Snowy Mountains and Victoria's alpine resorts. Rarely a problem for sightseeing, and hotel rates in the south are at their lowest — but the beaches are for walking, not swimming.

Before you book

Australia visa — what you need to know

Indian passport holders need a visa before travelling to Australia. For a holiday, a cruise, or to visit family and friends, the visa is the Visitor visa (subclass 600) in its Tourist stream, applied for online through ImmiAccount while you are outside Australia. It is decided by the Department of Home Affairs in Australia; there is no embassy interview and nothing is stamped in your passport.

Fee and processing, as the department publishes them The Department of Home Affairs publishes the Tourist stream (outside Australia) fee as from AUD 250 for each applicant, paid in ImmiAccount when you submit; the application is not processed until the fee is paid. Every person applies and pays separately, including children listed on a parent's passport. Health checks, police certificates and biometrics, if requested, are charged separately. The department publishes no fixed processing time for this visa. It points to its visa processing time guide tool, which shows times for recently decided applications and which it describes as "a guide only and not specific to your application". Apply well ahead of your travel dates, do not book non-refundable flights until the grant letter arrives, and confirm the fee when you apply, because it changes. Final visa decisions remain with the Department of Home Affairs.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes. Indian passport holders apply for the Visitor visa (subclass 600), Tourist stream, online through ImmiAccount before travelling, and must be outside Australia when it is applied for and when it is decided. Australia's quick electronic visas — the ETA (subclass 601) and the eVisitor (subclass 651) — are limited to listed passports and India is on neither list. The Department of Home Affairs publishes the fee as from AUD 250 per applicant, with every person, including children on a parent's passport, applying separately. No processing time is published; the department points to its processing time guide tool and says not to travel until the grant is in writing. Final visa decisions remain with the department.
The department decides the stay period case by case. Its own wording is that it generally grants a stay period of three months and might grant up to twelve months in certain circumstances. The visa may be single or multiple entry; the grant letter says which. Parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents may be granted a visa valid for more than twelve months, with the condition that they spend no more than twelve months in Australia in any eighteen-month period and hold adequate health insurance. The visa cannot be extended from inside Australia.
March to May and September to November are the best months nationally — warm cities, calm reef, comfortable desert. The Indian summer holiday in May and June falls in the Australian dry season, which is the ideal time for the Great Barrier Reef, Uluru, Kakadu and the Kimberley, though Melbourne will be cold. December to February is summer in Sydney and Melbourne but the wet season in the tropical north, when stingers close the beaches around Cairns. Diwali usually falls in the spring shoulder, which is excellent everywhere.
Ten to fourteen nights is a realistic first trip: Sydney, plus two of Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road, the Reef from Cairns or the Whitsundays, and Uluru. A week only works if you stay in one city and its surroundings. Every additional region is a domestic flight, so adding Perth or Tasmania means adding four or five nights, not two. Travellers visiting family often base themselves in one city and take a single side trip.
Yes. Air India and Qantas fly non-stop between Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru and Sydney and Melbourne, in around twelve to thirteen hours. Perth, Brisbane, Cairns and Adelaide have no non-stop service from India; Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Thai and the Gulf carriers connect through their hubs. Flying into Sydney and out of Melbourne, or the reverse, avoids backtracking.
Very. Every restaurant menu marks vegetarian and vegan dishes, Asian food of every kind is abundant, and Indian restaurants are everywhere in the cities — Harris Park in Sydney is a whole Indian neighbourhood. Supermarkets carry vegetarian ready meals and paneer. Jain and eggless requirements are understood in Indian restaurants; elsewhere, ask about fish sauce and stock in Thai and Vietnamese cooking. Remember that carrying homemade food into Australia is a customs matter: declare everything on the Incoming Passenger Card.
UPI does not work at Australian tills. A Visa or Mastercard with tap-to-pay enabled works almost everywhere, including buses, ferries and market stalls, and Sydney's public transport accepts a contactless bank card tapped directly on the reader. Very little cash is needed. Tipping is not expected; prices include the 10 per cent GST. Indian forex cards work as normal Visa or Mastercard cards.
