When to go

When is your Austria?

Summer
June – August
Mountains and Lakes Open

The high season for walking, cable cars, lake swimming and the alpine roads. Long days, warm valleys, and the Salzburg Festival in July and August. Cities can be hot and the lakes busy at weekends.

Winter
December – April
The Ski Season

Austria at its most characteristic: ski resorts running, cleared winter walking paths, thermal spas and snow on the valleys. Higher resorts hold their season longest; the Christmas and New Year weeks are the busiest and priciest of the year.

Autumn
September – October
Wine, Colour and Quiet

Arguably the best value in the calendar: clear mountain air, the Wachau grape harvest, autumn colour in the valleys and far fewer people in the cities. Some high lifts and roads begin to close from October.

Christmas Markets
Mid-Nov – late Dec
A Season of Its Own

Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck all run markets from about the middle of November until just after Christmas. Cold, dark by late afternoon, and the reason a lot of people choose Austria in the first place.

Spring
April – May
The In-Between

Cities are pleasant and quiet, but the mountains are between seasons — ski lifts closing, high roads still shut, some resort hotels closed altogether. Good for Vienna and the Danube, awkward for the high Alps.

Austria visa — what you need to know

Austria is in the Schengen area, so an Indian passport holder travels on a Schengen visa. The details below come from the Austrian Embassy in New Delhi and Austria's own consular rules — they are not the same in every Schengen country, and the timing rules in particular are worth reading before you book.

Fee and processing, as Austria publishes them Austria publishes the Schengen visa fee as €90, and €45 for children aged six to twelve, with under-sixes and certain study and research categories exempt; the Embassy states consular fees are paid in Indian rupees at the current exchange rate. It also states that the processing time for an admissible Schengen application should as a rule not exceed 15 calendar days, that prior consultation with other Schengen states is required for some nationalities and can add up to seven calendar days, and that times may currently be longer than usual. Fees and timeframes are set by the authorities and change — confirm both when you apply. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities. On timing, be careful how the fifteen-day figure is read: it is the standard decision period, generally fifteen calendar days after an admissible application has been received, and it is not a guaranteed end-to-end visa timeline. Further scrutiny or consultation between Schengen states can extend it, and appointment availability, biometrics and passport return all add time on top. Apply well in advance rather than to the minimum — applications can generally be lodged up to six months before travel, and that is the end of the window to plan to.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes. Austria is in the Schengen area and Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa C, which covers tourism, business and visiting purposes without employment for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Applications from India are lodged through VFS, but the Austrian Embassy in New Delhi states that it alone assesses them and that the external service provider plays no part in the decision. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.
Yes, and that matters in two directions. A Schengen visa issued by Austria lets you travel on into the other Schengen states, and a Schengen visa issued by another member state can be used to enter Austria. The rule for deciding where to apply is the main destination: you apply to the country where you will spend the longest, and if no single country dominates, to the one whose external border you enter first.
As early as you can. The window opens six months before departure and closes fifteen days before it — but that closing date is a rejection rule, not a plan, and applying anywhere near it leaves no room for an appointment, biometrics or the return of your passport. The 15-day limit is the important one — the Austrian Embassy states that applications made when departure is less than 15 days away will be rejected under the EU Visa Code, so this is a hard cut-off rather than advice. The Embassy also notes processing may be taking longer than usual and recommends applying as early as you can, and that an admissible application should as a rule be decided within 15 calendar days.
Austria is unusual in having two strong seasons rather than one. June to August is for the mountains and lakes, with everything open and long days. December to April is the ski season, and mid-November to late December is the Christmas market season. September and October are the quiet, good-value months, with the Wachau harvest and autumn colour. April and May are the weakest for the high Alps, when lifts and roads sit between seasons.
Seven to eight nights is the comfortable minimum for two regions — most often Vienna plus Salzburg and the lakes, or Vienna plus Tyrol. Ten to twelve lets you add the high Alps or a proper stay in the mountains rather than a night in transit. Vienna alone justifies three or four days, and the country is small enough that the train legs between regions are short.
Very. It offers a city, a lake and a mountain within a few hours of one another, so the trip can feel varied without long travel days. A common shape is Vienna for opera and coffee houses, a lake hotel in the Salzkammergut for the middle, and an alpine spa hotel to finish. Everything connects by rail, so no one has to drive.
It is one of the easier European countries to travel with children. Journeys between regions are short, trains are comfortable and take pushchairs without fuss, and much of what there is to do — cable cars, lake swimming, sledging, ski school — is active rather than passive. Vienna adds the Prater and the Schönbrunn zoo, which dates from 1752.
Easily, and by train rather than by air. Austria borders Germany, Czechia, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, and Vienna in particular is well connected to its neighbours by rail. If you do combine, remember the main-destination rule when applying for the Schengen visa: you apply to the country where you will spend the most time, not necessarily the first one you thought of.
