When to go

When is your Norway?

Summer
June – August
Midnight Sun

Everything is open — mountain roads, high hiking routes, fjord ferries and the far north. Above the Arctic Circle the sun does not set for weeks. The busiest and most expensive season, and the only one in which a full fjord-and-Lofoten itinerary reliably works.

Aurora
Late September – late March
Northern Lights Season

Long, dark nights make the aurora visible in the Arctic north, with Tromsø the usual base. Also the season for dog-sledding, whale watching off the north coast and snow-covered fjords — though many mountain roads and high trails are closed and daylight is very short at midwinter.

Shoulder
September – early October
Autumn Colour

Fjord valleys turn gold, the crowds thin sharply and prices fall. Late September also brings the first realistic aurora nights while there is still usable daylight — arguably the best value weeks of the year.

Spring
May – early June
Meltwater and Long Light

Waterfalls at their most powerful, orchards in blossom in Hardanger, and daylight already stretching very long. Some high roads and mountain passes remain closed into June, so check anything you are counting on.

Norway visa — what you need to know

Norway is in the Schengen area but not in the European Union, so Indian passport holders travel on a Schengen visa. The Norwegian process starts online, and the timing advice the Embassy gives is more conservative than the general Schengen rule for a specific and practical reason.

Fee and processing, as the Embassy publishes them The Embassy publishes the visa fee as €90 for adults and €45 for children aged six to eleven, free under six, with a VFS service fee of €20 per applicant in India. The fee is paid online when the application is registered in the Application Portal Norway. Processing is stated as normally up to 15 calendar days after the Embassy or consulate has received the application, with a further two days for Delhi and four to six days for other Indian cities allowed for courier transit — so the total is meaningfully longer than the headline figure. Applications should be lodged no later than 15 days before travel as a rule, and the Embassy recommends at least four weeks. Fees and timeframes are set by the authorities and change. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities. On timing, be careful how the fifteen-day figure is read: it is the standard decision period, generally fifteen calendar days after an admissible application has been received, and it is not a guaranteed end-to-end visa timeline. Further scrutiny or consultation between Schengen states can extend it, and appointment availability, biometrics and passport return all add time on top. Apply well in advance rather than to the minimum — applications can generally be lodged up to six months before travel, and that is the end of the window to plan to.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes. Norway is in the Schengen area — though not in the European Union — so Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa. The application is registered and paid for online in the Application Portal Norway, then submitted in person at a VFS centre with the printed form. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.
Longer than the headline figure suggests, because Norwegian files take a two-stage route. The Embassy states processing normally takes up to 15 calendar days after it receives the application, and files are then forwarded to UDI, the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration, for processing. On top of that the Embassy tells applicants to allow two days for Delhi or four to six days for other Indian cities for courier transit. Its own recommendation is to apply at least four weeks before departure rather than the formal 15-day minimum.
The Embassy publishes €90 for adults and €45 for children aged six to eleven, with under-sixes exempt, plus a VFS service fee of €20 per applicant in India. Norway is unusual in publishing that service fee itself — most missions say only that a charge applies. The visa fee is paid online when you register the application rather than at the counter.
They are opposite halves of the year and you cannot have both on one trip. North of the Arctic Circle the sun does not set for weeks around midsummer, roughly late May to late July, which is when hiking, ferries and mountain roads are all open. The aurora needs darkness and runs roughly late September to late March, when many high roads and trails are closed. Decide this first — it determines the entire itinerary.
No, and be wary of anyone who suggests otherwise. The aurora is a natural phenomenon dependent on solar activity and clear skies, and no operator or itinerary can promise it. What you can do is improve the odds: travel between late September and late March, base yourself well inside the aurora zone such as Tromsø, and allow three or four nights rather than one so that a cloudy evening does not end the attempt.
Yes — it is among the most expensive countries in the world, and restaurants and alcohol are where it shows most. It is manageable with a few habits: buy food from the Coop, Rema or Kiwi supermarket chains, drink the tap water, use ferries and trains that are already part of the route, and keep restaurant meals to a few chosen evenings. Wine and spirits are sold only through the state Vinmonopolet shops, with restricted hours and none on Sundays.
The Norwegian krone, and no, barely any. Norway is not in the European Union and does not use the euro. It is also one of the most cashless societies anywhere — cards work virtually everywhere, including on ferries and in remote mountain huts, and a growing number of businesses no longer accept cash at all. Carry a card and only a token amount of krone.
Seven to nine nights for one region done properly — typically Oslo, Bergen and the fjords, or a dedicated Lofoten and Arctic trip. Norway is long: Oslo to the far north is roughly Delhi to Chennai, so sweeping the whole country in a week means spending it in transit. Pick one or two regions and fly between them if you want both the south and the Arctic.
