When is your Switzerland?
The high season and the right answer for a first trip. Every pass, railway and cable car is running, the walking is at its best, and the days are long. Also the busiest and most expensive, and the mountain villages fill months ahead.
Larches turning gold, the clearest mountain air of the year and noticeably fewer people. Lower prices, but the first closures begin at altitude and daylight shortens quickly.
Ski season in the resorts, Christmas markets in the cities, and snow-covered villages that photograph beautifully. Many high-summer walking routes and some viewpoints are closed, and ski-season rates are their own peak.
The waterfalls run hardest as the snow melts and the meadows come into flower. Lower valleys are lovely; the highest passes and some cable cars may still be shut into June.
Switzerland's Zwischensaison. Between ski and summer, a large number of mountain railways, cable cars and resort hotels close for maintenance. It is the cheapest time to fly and the easiest way to arrive at a village where nothing is running. Check every lift you are counting on before booking these weeks.

Swiss visa — what you need to know
Switzerland is in the Schengen area but not in the European Union, so Indian passport holders travel on a Schengen visa issued by the Swiss authorities. The Embassy in New Delhi applies one eligibility rule that no other Schengen mission on this site applies, and it stops some applicants before they start.
Fee and processing, as the Embassy publishes them The Embassy's fee table, valid from 1 April 2026, publishes the adult Schengen visa fee as €90, shown as CHF 82 and ₹9,600, and the fee for a child aged six to twelve as €45, shown as CHF 41 and ₹4,800. An appeal against a visa refusal carries a separate fee published at CHF 200, or ₹23,400. The Embassy states the visa fee is payable on submission and is not refundable if the application is withdrawn or rejected, and that it may adjust the amounts at any time with exchange rate movements. Processing is published as 10 to 15 working days after submission at a VFS centre, with the Visa Code rule of a decision within 15 days, extendable in individual cases, and a possible consultation of other Schengen states taking up to a further 14 calendar days. Fees and timeframes are set by the authorities and change — confirm both when you apply. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities. On timing, be careful how the fifteen-day figure is read: it is the standard decision period, generally fifteen calendar days after an admissible application has been received, and it is not a guaranteed end-to-end visa timeline. Further scrutiny or consultation between Schengen states can extend it, and appointment availability, biometrics and passport return all add time on top. Apply well in advance rather than to the minimum — applications can generally be lodged up to six months before travel, and that is the end of the window to plan to.
