When to go

When is your Portugal?

Spring
April – June
The Best Months

Warm, green, long days and wildflowers across the Alentejo, with the Douro and Sintra at their most pleasant. Prices and crowds are well below the summer peak. If you have a free choice, take these weeks.

Summer
July – August
Beach Season

Hot inland — the Alentejo and Douro can be severe — but the Atlantic keeps the coast bearable. The Algarve is at its busiest and most expensive, and Lisbon and Porto fill with visitors. Book well ahead.

Autumn
September – October
Harvest and Warm Sea

Arguably the best time of all: the Douro grape harvest, sea still warm enough to swim, city temperatures comfortable and crowds thinning. October brings the first Atlantic rain to the north.

Winter
November – March
Mild and Cheap

Wet in the north, mild in the south, and very good value. Lisbon stays walkable, the Algarve gets winter sun, and Madeira is warm enough to be a genuine winter destination. Some coastal resorts close down.

Before you book

Portugal visa — what you need to know

Portugal is in the Schengen area and Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa. The Portuguese process has one quirk that catches people out: appointment slots are not continuously available, they are released in announced batches.

Fee and processing, as the Embassy publishes them Portugal charges the common Schengen visa fee. The Embassy pages did not publish a current rupee amount this page can quote reliably, so confirm the figure at the point of booking rather than relying on one quoted elsewhere — and note the appointment works on a pre-payment basis. On timing, the Embassy gives an average decision period of ten days for Schengen visas while also indicating at least fifteen days where documentation is complete; plan to the longer of the two. Applications may not be lodged more than six months, or fewer than fifteen days, before travel. Fees and timeframes are set by the authorities and change. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities. On timing, be careful how the fifteen-day figure is read: it is the standard decision period, generally fifteen calendar days after an admissible application has been received, and it is not a guaranteed end-to-end visa timeline. Further scrutiny or consultation between Schengen states can extend it, and appointment availability, biometrics and passport return all add time on top. Apply well in advance rather than to the minimum — applications can generally be lodged up to six months before travel, and that is the end of the window to plan to.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes. Portugal is in the Schengen area and Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa. All applications, Schengen or national, must be submitted through VFS Global with a booked appointment — the Embassy states that appointments are not requested or granted by email or postal mail. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.
Because Portugal does not keep slots continuously available. The Embassy publishes periodic public notices announcing the opening of appointment slots at VFS Global for defined date ranges, so an empty calendar usually means the current batch is exhausted and the next has not yet opened. Watch the Embassy's notices as well as the VFS calendar, and be ready to book immediately when a batch opens.
Through VFS Global. Visa application centres under the New Delhi Embassy's jurisdiction include New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Jalandhar and Kolkata. Portugal also keeps a Consulate General in Goa, a consequence of the two countries' shared history, which is useful if you are in western India. Confirm which mission and centre covers your place of residence before booking, since the division is set by the missions.
The Embassy gives an average decision period of ten days for Schengen visas, while also indicating a period of at least fifteen days where documentation is complete — so plan to the longer figure. Applications cannot be lodged more than six months, or fewer than fifteen days, before the intended travel date. Bring all documents in original and expect to give biometrics at the appointment, which operates on a pre-payment basis.
April to June and September to early October are the best months — warm, long days, comfortable cities and far fewer people than the summer peak. September also brings the Douro grape harvest with the sea still warm enough to swim. July and August are hot inland and very busy on the Algarve. Winter is mild and cheap, wet in the north, and Madeira stays warm enough to be a genuine winter destination.
Yes, noticeably. Food, wine, hotels, museum entry and transport all cost less than the equivalent in Spain, France or Italy, and considerably less than in Switzerland or Scandinavia. That makes Portugal unusually good for a longer trip: many travellers find they can add two or three nights for what a shorter stay elsewhere would have cost.
Seven nights covers Lisbon, Sintra and Porto with a day in the Douro. Ten lets you add the Algarve or the Alentejo. Madeira and the Azores are separate propositions reached by their own flights and each deserve four to six nights of their own — treat them as a second trip or build a longer itinerary rather than squeezing them onto a mainland week.
Not for Lisbon, Porto or Sintra — the trains and city transport are good and the historic centres are steep, narrow and largely restricted to traffic. A car earns its place in the Alentejo, the Algarve away from the main resorts, and for exploring the Douro beyond the railway. If you do hire one, check how the electronic motorway tolls are handled before you set off.
