When to go

When is your Belgium?

Shoulder
May · June · September
The Best Months

Warm without being hot, long evenings on the canal terraces, and noticeably fewer people than midsummer. Bruges in particular is far more pleasant before the peak. If you have a free choice, take these.

Summer
July – August
Long Days, Full Squares

The warmest weather and the busiest streets, with festivals across the country and terraces open late. Bruges can feel overwhelmed in the middle of the day; arrive early or stay overnight and enjoy it in the evening.

Autumn
October – November
Quiet and Golden

Colour in the Ardennes, empty museums and the lowest prices of the year. Wetter and darker as it goes on, but Belgium handles grey weather better than most countries — this is beer and chocolate season.

Winter
December – February
Christmas Markets

Christmas markets in Brussels, Bruges and Ghent through December, with ice rinks and mulled wine on the medieval squares. January and February are cold, damp and cheap, and the great indoor collections are at their emptiest.

Belgium visa — what you need to know

Belgium is in the Schengen area and Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa. Belgium runs its own online form system rather than a generic one, and it applies a deadline to that form which catches applicants out more than anything else in the process.

Fee and processing, as the Belgian authorities publish them Belgium publishes the short-stay C visa fee as €90, €45 for children aged six to twelve and free for children under six, with the long-stay D visa at €250, and states that applicants submitting at the Belgian visa application centre are levied a service fee of ₹2,750 inclusive of taxes. All fees are non-refundable. Applications are lodged through VFS Global, with direct submission at the Embassy or Consulate limited to holders of official passports, family members of EU citizens and VIPs with an appointment. Under the common Visa Code a decision is normally taken within fifteen calendar days and may be extended where a case needs further examination or consultation with other Schengen states. Fees and timeframes are set by the authorities and change — confirm both when you apply. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities. On timing, be careful how the fifteen-day figure is read: it is the standard decision period, generally fifteen calendar days after an admissible application has been received, and it is not a guaranteed end-to-end visa timeline. Further scrutiny or consultation between Schengen states can extend it, and appointment availability, biometrics and passport return all add time on top. Apply well in advance rather than to the minimum — applications can generally be lodged up to six months before travel, and that is the end of the window to plan to.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes. Belgium is in the Schengen area and Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa. Applications are submitted at a VFS Global visa application centre — only holders of official passports, family members of EU citizens and VIPs with an appointment may lodge directly at the Embassy or Consulate. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.
VisaOnWeb is Belgium's own online application system: you create an account, complete the form online, print it and bring it to the visa application centre. The important part is that the electronic form is valid for only 30 days from creation — if you have not attended a centre within that window to confirm the application, it is deleted and you must start again. Secure your appointment first, then create the form.
The short-stay visa is €90, reduced to €45 for children aged six to twelve and free for children under six; the long-stay visa is €250. Belgium also publishes the visa application centre service fee, which is ₹2,750 including taxes. All fees are non-refundable, so neither amount comes back if the application is refused or withdrawn.
Overseas medical insurance covering at least €30,000 or the equivalent, valid in all Schengen countries. Belgium is specific that the policy must show validity dates covering your arrival and departure — an annual policy without dates that clearly bracket the trip is a common reason for a file being returned. Check the certificate dates as carefully as the sum insured.
Not under twelve. All other applicants appear in person for fingerprints and a photograph, and the data is held for 59 months in the Visa Information System. If you gave prints for a Schengen visa within that period you may not need to give them again, which is worth checking before assuming a second visit to the centre.
Four or five nights covers it comfortably. Belgium's advantage is that Brussels, Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp are all within about an hour of each other by train, so one base and day trips works better than moving hotels. The commonest mistake is a single day trip from Amsterdam or Paris, which sees Bruges at its most crowded and nothing else at all.
Both, and give Ghent the night if you have to choose one. Bruges is the more perfectly preserved and the more famous, which also makes it the more crowded — it is at its best early in the morning and after the day coaches leave. Ghent has the same medieval architecture with a university city's energy, a castle in the middle of town, the Ghent Altarpiece, and noticeably lower prices.
English, and you will be fine everywhere. Belgium has three official languages — Dutch in Flanders, French in Wallonia and German in a small eastern community — and Brussels is officially bilingual. The one thing to avoid is assuming French works throughout: Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp are Dutch-speaking, and opening in English is more welcome than opening in French.
