JR Pass — Worth Pricing Before You Buy The nationwide Japan Rail Pass (7, 14 or 21 days; ¥50,000 for seven days in ordinary class on the official website) covers JR trains including most Shinkansen — the fastest Nozomi and Mizuho services need an extra special ticket. It pays off on longer multi-city routes but not always on a short Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka trip, so we price it against individual tickets for every journey we design.

When to go

When Is Your Japan?

Peak Season
March – May
Cherry Blossom Season

The most celebrated season. Sakura transforms parks, temples and riverbanks into something that defies description. Book 8–12 months in advance. Pleasant weather, 10–20°C.

Good Season
June – August
Summer & Festivals

Hot and humid in cities (28–35°C) but alive with matsuri festivals, Gion Matsuri in Kyoto, fireworks and the magical glow of fireflies. Hokkaido is cool and spectacular with lavender in bloom.

Best Season
September – November
Autumn Koyo Season

Koyo — Japan's autumn colour change — rivals cherry blossom season for pure beauty. Maples turn temples gold and crimson. Arguably the finest season of all. Cool, dry and deeply atmospheric.

Quiet Season
December – February
Winter & Snow

Hokkaido's powder snow is legendary. Kyoto temples under snow are ethereal. Onsen ryokans become the most logical places on earth. Fewer crowds and lower prices — an intimate Japan.

Japan Visa — What You Need to Know

Indian passport holders require a Japan tourist visa prior to travel. Japan does not offer visa on arrival for Indians — but the process is straightforward and with complete documentation, approval rates are very high.

Processing Time 4–7 working days · Apply 4–6 weeks before travel · For cherry blossom season apply 10 weeks ahead

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes, Indian passport holders require a Japan tourist visa applied for before travel. Japan does not offer visa on arrival for Indians. Processing takes 4–7 working days through VFS or the Embassy of Japan in India. Live Traveller prepares complete visa documentation for all Japan journeys we design.
March to May (cherry blossom season) and September to November (autumn koyo) are the finest times to visit. Spring sakura is particularly special — book 8–12 months in advance for peak cherry blossom weeks (late March to mid-April). Winter (December–February) offers excellent skiing in Hokkaido and intimate ryokan experiences with fewer crowds.
For premium travel including flights, 4–5★ hotels, most meals and guided experiences: 5–6 nights costs approximately ₹2–2.8 lakhs per person; 7–9 nights ₹3–4 lakhs; 10–12 nights ₹4–5 lakhs; 14+ nights ₹5.5–7 lakhs. Luxury ryokan and fine dining circuits start from ₹8 lakhs per person.
Japan is consistently ranked among the safest countries in the world. Violent crime is extremely rare, public transport is reliable and clean, and lost items are frequently handed in to local police. Japan is safe for solo female travellers, families and senior travellers. Standard travel insurance including medical coverage is recommended.
Yes. Japanese Buddhist cuisine (shojin ryori) is completely vegetarian. Udon, soba, tempura vegetables and rice bowls are widely available, but their broths and sauces are often made with fish stock (dashi), so carry a card in Japanese that explains your diet. Major cities — Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto — have Indian restaurants. Halal options are increasingly available in tourist areas. Live Traveller can arrange specific dietary requirements as part of your journey design.
The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) gives unlimited travel on JR trains, including most Shinkansen, for 7, 14 or 21 days; the fastest Nozomi and Mizuho services need an extra special ticket. It is bought on the official website or through an authorised agent. Whether it saves money depends on your route: it usually pays off on a longer circuit that adds Hiroshima or the north, and often does not on a short Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka trip — we price both options for every multi-city journey we design.
For a meaningful first visit covering Tokyo, Hakone/Fuji, Kyoto and Osaka, 9–10 nights is ideal. 5–6 nights is the minimum for a memorable Golden Triangle visit. 12–14 nights allows you to add Hiroshima, Miyajima, Nara and potentially Hokkaido or Kanazawa. Japan rewards longer stays — returning travellers consistently say they wish they had stayed longer.
