How much time you need
When to go to Montenegro
Clearly the best windows. The coast is warm and navigable rather than overwhelmed, the sea is swimmable from June and still warm into September, and the mountain roads to Durmitor are open. Kotor’s walls are a punishing climb in August heat and pleasant in May.
Peak season on the coast, and it is genuinely crowded — Kotor takes cruise traffic and the beach towns fill. The mountains are at their best in these months, so a summer trip works if it is weighted inland rather than to the bay.
The coast is quiet, wet and largely shut; the interior is snowbound, with a ski season at Kolašin and Žabljak. Durmitor’s high roads close. It suits a skiing trip or a very quiet Kotor, not a touring one.

Montenegro entry — a visa is required
Montenegro leaves no ambiguity on its own India page — an ordinary Indian passport needs a visa to enter, and there is no visa on arrival to fall back on. Applications are made at Montenegrin diplomatic and consular posts, and there is a VFS Global visa application centre in New Delhi, which is the practical route for most travellers. There is a second route worth asking about: Montenegro’s visa regime describes holders of a valid Schengen, United States, United Kingdom or Irish visa or residence permit being able to enter and stay for a limited period without a Montenegrin visa. That provision is written generally and is not restated on the India page, so we will not tell you it covers your passport — but if you hold one of those documents it is the first question to put to a Montenegrin mission, because it would change the trip entirely.
Settle which route applies before you book There are two possible routes into Montenegro on an Indian passport and they demand completely different preparation, so establish which one you are on before anything is non-refundable. The default is a visa application through a Montenegrin mission or the VFS centre in New Delhi, which takes documentation and time. The alternative is the provision for holders of a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit — if that reaches you, the paperwork largely disappears, and if it does not, discovering so at an airport is expensive. Ask a Montenegrin mission specifically about your document, and get the answer before you commit. Note also that any such entry is bounded by the validity of the document you are relying on, so a visa expiring mid-trip is a problem. We do not publish visa fees or processing times here.
