How long Panama actually needs
Dry season, green season,
and a Caribbean coast that ignores both
Panama’s summer, and the reliable window: least rain on the Pacific side, best light over Panama City and the canal, easiest trail conditions in the highlands and calmest seas for boat days. It is also the busiest and most expensive stretch, and the highlands around Boquete get genuinely cool at night.
Rain arrives, usually as heavy afternoon downpours rather than all-day grey, and the forest turns. Mornings are often clear enough to do everything you planned. Prices soften and the crowds thin — a good-value window if you can work around afternoons.
Many years bring a brief let-up in the rains through the middle of the green season. It is a tendency rather than a guarantee, so treat it as a bonus if it arrives rather than something to plan the trip around.
The heaviest rain on the Pacific side, with trails and unpaved roads affected and boat days more often cancelled. The Caribbean side runs on a different rhythm and can be at its best here, which is exactly why the coast you choose matters more than the month.

Panama entry — a visa, unless another country’s visa exempts you
The Consulate General of Panama in Mumbai states the default plainly: "Indian nationals require a stamp Visa to travel to Panama", and "Applications for Visa in India are only made at the CONSULATE OF PANAMA IN MUMBAI". The Embassy of India in Panama publishes the same position from the Indian side. The exemption sits alongside it, under Executive Decree 521: passport holders of any country who hold a residence card or a valid multiple-entry visa — previously used — from Canada, the United States, Australia, South Korea, Japan, the United Kingdom, Singapore or any European Union state do not require a Panamanian visa. The conditions are specific and all of them apply: the visa must be multiple-entry; it must already have been used to enter the country that issued it; and it must have at least six months validity remaining when you enter Panama. The consulate adds a passport with six months validity, proof of economic solvency of at least US$500 on entry, and a round-trip ticket.
Check the consulate before you plan anything Two things make Panama unusual for Indian travellers right now. The first is that the Mumbai consulate’s own page states visa services in India are temporarily closed "in compliance with the protocols established by the Government of Panama", and that the consulate will announce on its website when applications reopen. That was the position when this page was last checked, on 12 September 2026 — confirm it yourself, because it is the single fact that decides whether a Panamanian visa can be obtained from India at all. The second is that the exemption route is genuinely available to a lot of Indian travellers: if you already hold a used, multiple-entry US, UK, Schengen or other qualifying visa with six months left on it, you may not need a Panamanian visa at all. That is worth checking before you assume the trip is blocked. If you do apply, the consulate states the process "might take up to 3 months", does not issue e-visas through any website or agency, and accepts applications only directly from the applicant.
