When to go

When to go to Bhutan

Best
Mar–May
Spring

Rhododendron and magnolia in flower across the passes, comfortable walking weather and the Paro tshechu. Clear mornings with cloud building through the afternoon.

Best
Sep–Nov
Autumn

The clearest skies of the year and the best Himalayan views, with the Thimphu and Punakha tshechus falling in this window. The most popular season, and the one that books out first.

Good
Dec–Feb
Winter

Cold, bright and very quiet, with the black-necked cranes at Phobjikha. Higher passes can close after snow, but the western valleys stay accessible and the light is superb.

Limited
Jun–Aug
Monsoon

Rain, leeches on the trails and cloud on the peaks. Landslides can delay road transfers. Green and quiet, but not the Bhutan most travellers picture.

Why Live Traveller

Planning Bhutan with us

Researched, not resold

Every destination we offer is researched and vetted by our team before we recommend it.

Quoted in writing

Every journey is quoted individually and in writing before you commit, so you know what is included before you decide.

Designed around you

Each journey is a starting point. Dates, pace, stays and routing are reworked around how you actually want to travel.

Before you book

Bhutan entry — permits, not visas

Indians travel to Bhutan without a visa, but two permits are required: an Entry Permit and, for travel beyond Thimphu and Paro, a Route Permit. Both are free of charge.

The Sustainable Development Fee The SDF for Indian nationals is ₹1,200 per person per night, a rate confirmed valid to 31 August 2027. Children aged six to twelve pay half, and children under six are exempt.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

No visa is required for Indian nationals, but two permits are: an Entry Permit, and a Route Permit for travel beyond Thimphu and Paro. Both are free. The Department of Tourism lets you apply yourself before travelling, have a tour operator or hotel apply on your behalf, or apply at your point of entry — though it warns of a long wait for the last of those.
The SDF for Indian nationals is ₹1,200 per person per night, a rate confirmed valid through 31 August 2027. Children aged six to twelve pay half and children under six are exempt. Visitors to the border towns of Samtse, Phuentsholing, Gelephu and Samdrup Jongkhar for under 24 hours are not required to pay it.
Not in the way you might travel independently elsewhere. You are required to stay in Department of Tourism certified accommodation for the whole trip. Within that framework your itinerary can be entirely private and flexible — it is not group travel.
Taktsang is a steady uphill walk of roughly two to three hours each way, on a good path, with a cafeteria at the halfway point and a final staircase descent and climb across the gorge. No technical skill is required, but it is sustained effort at altitude. Horses can carry you as far as the halfway point.
Autumn, September to November, gives the clearest mountain views and the major tshechus. Spring, March to May, brings rhododendron in flower and the Paro festival. Winter is cold, bright and very quiet, with black-necked cranes in Phobjikha. June to August is monsoon and the least rewarding window.
Five nights across Paro, Thimphu and Punakha is the complete first visit, and the SDF gives you a good reason not to pad it. Four works if you focus on Paro and Thimphu. Adding Phobjikha justifies seven, and only return visitors should be pushing east to Bumthang.
