When to go

When is your Britain?

Summer
June – August
Long Days, Everything Open

The warmest months and by far the longest days — light until nearly ten in England and close to midnight in the far north of Scotland. Every attraction is open and the Edinburgh festivals fill August. Also the busiest and priciest, and rain is still perfectly possible.

Shoulder
May · September
The Sweet Spot

Long daylight without peak crowds or prices. May brings bluebell woods and gardens at their best; September is often the most settled month of the year with the Highlands still accessible. If you have a free choice, take these.

Autumn
October – November
Colour and Quiet

Autumn colour in the Lakes, the Cotswolds and the Highlands, sharply lower prices and empty walking routes. Daylight shortens quickly, storms become more frequent, and some rural attractions reduce their hours.

Winter
December – March
Short Days, Warm Interiors

Dark by four, and by mid-afternoon in Scotland — but this is the season of Christmas markets, log fires, pantomime and empty museums. Cities work well; a Highlands driving tour does not. Cold rather than freezing, and usually wet rather than snowy.

Before you book

UK visa — what you need to know

The United Kingdom is not in the Schengen area and is no longer in the European Union. It runs its own visa system, so a Schengen visa does not admit you. An Irish visa does not admit you either — unless it carries the "BIVS" endorsement under the British-Irish Visa Scheme, in which case you must travel to Ireland first before continuing to the UK. Without that endorsement, Indian passport holders need a UK Standard Visitor visa, applied for online and completed in person.

Fee and processing, as the Home Office publishes them GOV.UK states that you apply online before travelling and attend an appointment at a visa application centre, that the earliest you can apply is three months before travel, and that you will usually get a decision within three weeks. Optional paid Priority and Super Priority services are available in India for a faster decision. The Home Office publishes fees for applicants in India as ₹18,060 for the short-term visa of up to six months — £135 on GOV.UK — with longer-term visitor visas at ₹67,693 for two years, ₹120,805 for five years and ₹150,905 for ten years, each still limiting an individual visit to six months. Visa application centres may charge separate service fees. There is no published minimum bank balance; the test is that you can support yourself and any dependants, assessed on your circumstances as a whole. Fees and timeframes are set by the authorities and change — confirm both when you apply. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes, in almost every case. The UK is not in the Schengen area and is no longer in the European Union, so it runs its own system and a Schengen visa does not admit you. An Irish visa does not admit you either, unless it carries the "BIVS" endorsement under the British-Irish Visa Scheme — and then only if you travel to Ireland first. Otherwise Indian passport holders need a UK Standard Visitor visa. GOV.UK states that you must apply online before you travel and attend an appointment at a visa application centre, where your identity is checked and your fingerprints and photograph are taken. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.
No. This is the most persistent myth in the Indian market and it is simply not a Home Office rule. GOV.UK publishes no minimum balance, no fixed figure and no required number of months of statements for a Standard Visitor visa. The published test is that you can support yourself and any dependants during the trip, or have funding from someone who will. Assessment is discretionary and considers your circumstances as a whole — finances, ties, travel history, and whether your plans are credible and affordable.
The earliest you can apply is three months before you travel, and GOV.UK states you will usually get a decision within three weeks. In India the Home Office also offers optional paid Priority and Super Priority services for a faster decision. Those buy speed, not a different outcome, so it is still worth applying as early as the three-month window allows rather than relying on a paid upgrade.
The Home Office publishes fees for applicants in India in rupees: ₹18,060 for the short-term visa of up to six months, which GOV.UK shows as £135, and ₹67,693, ₹120,805 and ₹150,905 for the two, five and ten-year long-term visitor visas. Priority and Super Priority are charged separately, and the visa application centre may add its own service fees. Confirm the current amounts when you apply.
It depends how often you return, and it is commonly misunderstood. A two, five or ten-year visitor visa does not let you stay longer — each individual visit is still capped at six months. What it saves is repeat applications. For a family visiting relatives every year or two, or someone travelling regularly for business, the longer visa often works out cheaper and removes the three-week wait each time.
Only conditionally, and you should not assume it. Under the British-Irish Visa Scheme, which currently applies only to Indian and Chinese nationals, some UK visitor visas permit onward travel to the Republic of Ireland without a separate Irish visa. Two conditions apply: your visa must carry the code "BIVS", and you must travel to the issuing country first — so with a UK-issued visa you must enter the UK before continuing to Ireland. Unaccompanied children are excluded. Check your visa for the endorsement.
Yes. Northern Ireland — Belfast, the Causeway Coastal Route and the Giant's Causeway — is part of the United Kingdom, so a UK visa covers it with no additional permission. The Republic of Ireland to the south is a separate country with its own visa system. The land border is open and unmarked, which makes it easy to cross without noticing, so plan your Irish permission separately unless your visa carries the BIVS endorsement.
A valid passport, your travel dates, where you will stay, information about your finances and employment, and details of any criminal or immigration history. The requirement that catches most Indian applicants out is translation: GOV.UK states you must provide certified translations of any document not in English or Welsh. Property papers, affidavits, some bank documents and many educational certificates are affected, so audit every document early rather than days before the appointment.
