When is your Costa Rica?
The Pacific coast, Guanacaste, Arenal and the Central Valley at their driest and clearest. Best for beaches, volcano views and road travel. Also the busiest and the most expensive, with Christmas to New Year and Easter week the peaks.
Mornings are usually clear; rain arrives in the afternoon and the forest is at its greenest. Fewer visitors and better lodge rates. Turtle nesting begins at Tortuguero in July and humpback whales arrive on the southern Pacific coast.
The heaviest rain of the year on the Pacific side and in the mountains, with some roads and remote lodges affected. The Caribbean coast is the exception — these are two of its drier months, and still turtle season at Tortuguero.
Resplendent quetzals are most reliably seen in the cloud forest from about February to April, in the breeding season. Green turtles nest at Tortuguero from July to October. If a particular animal is the point of the trip, its season sets the dates.

Costa Rica visa — what you need to know
Under Costa Rica's current entry directive, Indian passport holders are in the group that requires a consular visa, applied for through the Embassy of Costa Rica in New Delhi. There is a significant exemption for travellers who already hold certain other visas, and the directive that governs it was rewritten in November 2025 — so much of what is published elsewhere is out of date.
Fee and processing, as the authorities publish them Costa Rica's current entry directive, issued by the Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería and published in the official gazette in November 2025, places India in the consular-visa group and sets the conditions above. It states that the fee for a consular visa is the one set by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship and does not give an amount, and it gives no processing time; the embassy in New Delhi publishes neither on a page of its own. We do not invent either figure. Travellers holding a valid multiple-entry US, Canadian or Schengen visa, or a residence permit for the UK, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland or an EU state, may be exempt on the terms set out above — and those terms changed in November 2025, so confirm your own position against the current directive rather than against an older summary. Entry rules are set by the authorities and change; final decisions on entry rest with the Costa Rican immigration officer at the border.
