When to go

When is your Finland?

Summer
June – August
The Nightless Season

The reason most people come. Helsinki lives outdoors and on the water; the lake district is warm enough to swim and is where Finns themselves go; the archipelago ferries run at full frequency. North of the Arctic Circle the sun does not properly set for weeks. Warm rather than hot, mosquito-prone inland, and the busiest and priciest months.

Autumn
September – October
Ruska and First Light Shows

Ruska is the short, intense turn of autumn colour that moves south down the country through September, and it is the best hiking window of the year — cool, dry-ish, no mosquitoes and empty trails. Nights are dark again by September, so the aurora season reopens in the north while the ground is still bare.

Winter
December – March
Snow, Ice and Aurora

Lapland is reliably snow-covered and this is the season for husky and reindeer sledding, snowshoeing and aurora hunting on clear nights. In the far north kaamos, the polar night, means the sun stays below the horizon for weeks and the light turns blue rather than absent. Helsinki and the south get snow and long dark afternoons, and the lakes freeze hard enough to walk on.

Spring
April – May
Thaw and the Returning Light

The quietest and least predictable season. Lapland often keeps good snow with much longer, brighter days well into April, which is why Finns themselves ski then. Further south it is the messy thaw — ice going out of the lakes, trails wet, some cottage and ferry services not yet running. Cheap, calm, and best for travellers who do not need a guarantee.

Finland visa — what you need to know

Finland is in the Schengen area, so Indian passport holders travel on a Schengen short-stay visa. Finland runs the process in a more conventional order than some Schengen countries: you complete the application at finlandvisa.fi, then book an appointment at the VFS Global visa application centre and attend in person. The part that catches people out is not the sequence but the timing — applications open six months ahead, and the published processing time is a floor rather than a promise.

Fee and processing, as the Finnish authorities publish them The Finnish mission to India publishes the Schengen visa fee as 90 euro, shown as INR 9,900 on its own India fee page, and 45 euro (INR 4,900) for children aged six to eleven. Children under six are fee exempt, as are family members of EU citizens exercising free movement rights and school pupils, students, postgraduate students and accompanying teachers travelling for study. The fee schedule is grounded in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs decree on Foreign Service fees for 2026. The European Commission raised the standard Schengen fee from 80 to 90 euro on 11 June 2024. Separately, the mission notes that the visa application centre may charge its own service fee — it does not publish that amount, so treat it as an extra cost to confirm with VFS rather than a known figure. Processing is published as 15 days and may be longer where a more detailed examination is required, with the Visa Code allowing up to 45 calendar days in individual cases. Fees and timeframes are set by the authorities and change — confirm both at the time you apply. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities. On timing, be careful how the fifteen-day figure is read: it is the standard decision period, generally fifteen calendar days after an admissible application has been received, and it is not a guaranteed end-to-end visa timeline. Further scrutiny or consultation between Schengen states can extend it, and appointment availability, biometrics and passport return all add time on top. Apply well in advance rather than to the minimum — applications can generally be lodged up to six months before travel, and that is the end of the window to plan to.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes. The Finnish mission to India publishes Finland's requirement directly: a visa is required for the Schengen area and Finland, with the only listed exemption being holders of diplomatic passports. An ordinary Indian passport therefore needs a Schengen short-stay visa.
You complete the application form at finlandvisa.fi, where the required documents and photo specification are published, and then book an appointment at the VFS Global visa application centre. The Finnish mission's India customer-service page states that submission is by appointment only at the Finland Visa Application Centre VFS Global in New Delhi. Honorary consulates do not grant visas.
The Finnish mission publishes a processing time of 15 days, and states that it may be longer where a more detailed examination is required. The EU Visa Code allows extension to a maximum of 45 calendar days in individual cases. Applications open six months before travel, so start early rather than relying on the published figure. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.
The Finnish mission to India publishes the Schengen visa fee as 90 euro, shown as INR 9,900 on its India fee page, with 45 euro (INR 4,900) for children aged six to eleven and no fee for children under six. The mission also notes that the visa application centre may charge its own service fee, which it does not publish — confirm that separately with VFS.
A Schengen short-stay visa allows travel in the Schengen area for no more than 90 days in any 180-day period. However, you must apply to the country that is your main destination by number of days, or by the purpose of the trip. If Finland is only a short leg of a longer European trip, Finland may not be the country you should apply to.
June to August for lakes, the archipelago and near-endless daylight; December to March for reliable snow, husky and reindeer sledding and the aurora in the north. September and October are the best hiking window, with ruska colour and the return of dark enough nights for the aurora. April and May are the quietest and least predictable.
In the north, on clear dark nights, roughly between late August and early April. The aurora depends on solar activity and cloud cover, so no operator or itinerary can promise it — the honest approach is to go north, stay several nights, and treat a sighting as a very likely bonus rather than a booked event.
Seven to nine nights covers Helsinki with either the lakes or Lapland comfortably. Trying to combine Helsinki, Lakeland and Lapland in a week means most of it is spent travelling — Rovaniemi is around 800km north of Helsinki.
