When to go

When is your Denmark?

Summer
June – August
The Long Days

The reason to come. Daylight stretches deep into the evening, harbour swimming opens, Tivoli and the coast are at their best, and the whole country moves outdoors. Warm rather than hot, and the busiest and priciest season.

Shoulder
May · September
Quieter and Still Bright

Long days without peak crowds or peak prices. May brings gardens and beech woods into leaf; September keeps the light and adds the first of the autumn starling flocks in the Wadden Sea.

Autumn
October
Light Fading, Coast Dramatic

Cooler, windier and emptier. Good for museums, the sort sol murmurations and the North Sea coast at its most atmospheric, though daylight shortens quickly.

December
December
Christmas and Hygge

Dark by mid-afternoon, which is precisely the point — Christmas markets, Tivoli lit for the season, and hygge as a functioning national coping strategy rather than a marketing word.

Winter
January – March
Short Days, Low Prices

Cold, grey, wet and very short on daylight. The cheapest and quietest time; coastal and rural attractions reduce hours or close, and this is not the season for a first visit.

Before you book

Denmark visa — what you need to know

Denmark is in the Schengen area, so Indian passport holders travel on a Schengen visa. But Denmark runs the process in a different order from most Schengen countries: you apply and pay online first, and only then can you book an appointment. Getting that sequence wrong is the most common way a Danish application stalls before it has begun.

Fee and processing, as the Danish authorities publish them The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes a standard short-stay visa fee of 90 euro, and 45 euro for children between the ages of six and eleven, noting that fee rates changed on 11 June 2024; children under six are fee exempt. The fee is paid online in ApplyVisa at the time of application rather than at the visa centre, and the visa application centre may charge its own separate service fee. Processing cannot exceed 15 calendar days, or 45 days in exceptional cases, and the Embassy states that transport time to and from the Embassy is not included in that period. Fees and timeframes are set by the authorities and change — confirm both at the time you apply. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities. On timing, be careful how the fifteen-day figure is read: it is the standard decision period, generally fifteen calendar days after an admissible application has been received, and it is not a guaranteed end-to-end visa timeline. Further scrutiny or consultation between Schengen states can extend it, and appointment availability, biometrics and passport return all add time on top. Apply well in advance rather than to the minimum — applications can generally be lodged up to six months before travel, and that is the end of the window to plan to.

Before you book

The practical detail that makes Signature Journeys effortless — what to know before you go, from people who travel for a living.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes. Denmark is in the Schengen area and Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa. Applications from India are made through the Royal Danish Embassy in New Delhi, submitted at a VFS Global visa application centre by appointment — the Embassy states you can submit an application only with an appointment. Indian citizens holding diplomatic or official passports do not need a visa for Denmark, though they may still need one for other Schengen countries. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.
The order. The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs runs an online system called ApplyVisa, where you register, complete the application, pay the visa fee and print and sign a cover letter. The Embassy states that this online process, including payment, must be finished before you can book a VFS appointment, and that you should allow up to 24 hours afterwards for validation before the appointment calendar becomes available. Most Schengen countries let you book first and pay at the centre; Denmark does not.
Processing cannot exceed 15 calendar days, or 45 days in exceptional cases. Two Danish specifics are worth planning around: the Embassy states that transport time between the visa centre and the Embassy is not counted within that processing time, and it names March through September as its peak season, recommending applications be submitted at least four weeks in advance during those months. Applications can be lodged up to six months before travel.
No, and this catches people out. The Danish Immigration Service states that a visa to enter Denmark or another Schengen country is not valid for entry into the Faroe Islands or Greenland, because neither is part of the Schengen area. If you intend to visit either, your visa must specifically state that it is valid for the Faroe Islands and/or Greenland. You do not need a separate application — the request is made through the same Danish one — but you do have to ask for it.
Proof of Schengen health insurance must be submitted with the application, covering repatriation and emergency medical treatment, with a minimum sum insured of EUR 30,000 or USD 50,000. Your passport must also be valid for at least three months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area, contain at least two blank pages, and have been issued within the previous ten years.
The Danish krone, written DKK or kr. Denmark is an EU member but has not adopted the euro, and euros are not generally accepted. The more useful thing to know is that Denmark is close to cashless — cards are taken almost everywhere, including on buses and at market stalls, and some places no longer accept cash at all. Carry very little.
June to August for the long daylight, harbour swimming and everything being open — this is when Denmark is at its best and its busiest. May and September keep most of the light with fewer people and lower prices. December is dark but genuinely atmospheric for Christmas markets and Tivoli. January to March is cheap, grey and very short on daylight, and is not the season for a first visit.
Six or seven nights works well: three or four in Copenhagen and the rest on one other thread — Aarhus and the Viking sites of Jutland, or the coast at Skagen or Møn. Copenhagen alone justifies three days. Denmark is small and the trains are quick, so adding a second region costs you very little travel time.
