When to go

When is your Jordan?

Peak
March – May
Spring

Wildflowers on the hills, mild days at Petra and Wadi Rum, and the Dead Sea warm enough to enjoy without being punishing. The most popular window, so Petra is busiest — go in at opening. Easter and the spring holidays fill the good hotels.

Peak
September – November
Autumn

The desert cools from October, the sea at Aqaba is still warm, and the light in Wadi Rum is at its best. Late September can still be hot in the south; November is close to ideal everywhere. Lines up well with Diwali and the Indian October holidays.

Value
December – February
Winter

Cold in Amman and at Petra — rain, and occasionally snow, especially in January — but the Dead Sea and Aqaba stay mild and the sites are quiet. Pack properly and it is a fine time; the desert camps are cold at night.

Hot
June – August
Summer

Dry heat. Amman is warm but comfortable in the evenings; Petra needs a dawn start and a long midday break; Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea regularly pass 40°C. Workable with early mornings and a pool, and the quietest season for prices.

Jordan visa — what you need to know

Indian passport holders need a visa for Jordan, and for a short tourist visit there are two practical routes: a visa on arrival at the border, or an e-visa applied for in advance on the Jordanian Ministry of Interior's portal. The Jordan Pass, sold by Jordan's Ministry of Tourism, waives the visa fee if you buy it before you land and stay at least two nights.

Fee and processing, as the official sites publish them The Jordan Pass site of Jordan's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities publishes the single-entry tourist visa fee as 40 Jordanian dinars, waived for pass holders who buy before arrival and stay a minimum of two consecutive nights, and states that the single-entry visa is valid for one month. The Embassy of India in Amman states that a visa on arrival is available to Indian passport holders at border crossings for short-term tourism and that the process may take two to three hours, and that an e-visa can be applied for in advance on the Ministry of Interior's e-services portal. No e-visa fee or processing time is quoted here, because the ministry's pages were not reachable when this page was written and no other source is reliable enough to plan against. Fees and rules are set by the Jordanian authorities and change; confirm them on moi.gov.jo before travelling. Final visa decisions remain with the Jordanian authorities.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes. For a short tourist visit the Embassy of India in Amman sets out two practical routes: a visa on arrival at Jordan's border crossings, or an e-visa applied for in advance on the Ministry of Interior's e-services portal. The embassy warns that the on-arrival process can take two to three hours. A visa from a Jordanian embassy is the route for employment or long stays, not holidays. The Jordan Pass, if bought before arrival and combined with a stay of at least two nights, waives the single-entry visa fee, which the pass site states as 40 dinars. Rules change; confirm on moi.gov.jo before you travel, and remember that visa decisions rest with the Jordanian authorities.
Almost always, if you are visiting Petra and staying two nights or more. The pass costs 70, 75 or 80 dinars for one, two or three consecutive days at Petra, includes more than forty other sites including Jerash and Wadi Rum, and waives the 40-dinar single-entry visa fee provided you buy it before you land and stay at least two consecutive nights. It is not a visa — you still go through the visa counter — and it does not cover Petra by Night or the Baptism Site. Print it; the QR code is checked at the airport and every site.
Yes. Royal Jordanian flies non-stop between Mumbai and Amman in about five hours, on a few days a week rather than daily, and lists Delhi on its direct network — check the current timetable when you plan. From Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata and elsewhere the practical routing is one stop through Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Muscat. Jordan is two and a half hours behind India, so jet lag is not a factor.
Seven nights covers the essentials — two in Amman with a day trip to Jerash, one at the Dead Sea, two at Petra and one or two in Wadi Rum. Ten nights adds Aqaba and the Red Sea, the King's Highway with Madaba, Mount Nebo and Kerak, and a slower pace at Petra. Five nights is possible if you skip the north and go straight south, but it is tight.
Jordan itself has been stable and calm for decades and is a country where solo travellers, families and women travel comfortably; crime against visitors is rare and the tourism police are visible at the main sites. What changes is the situation in neighbouring countries, which affects news coverage far more than it affects a holiday inside Jordan. Check your government's current travel advice before booking, buy insurance, and stay away from the border areas that the advisories name.
Very. Jordanian everyday food is built on chickpeas, lentils, aubergine, yoghurt, rice and bread — hummus, falafel, mutabbal, fattoush, moujadara and stuffed vegetables are on every menu and are naturally vegetarian. Tell restaurants "nabati". Jain or no-onion-garlic diets need a conversation at each meal because garlic is in most dips. Amman and Aqaba have Indian restaurants, and hotel breakfasts are large. Alcohol is served in hotels and licensed restaurants but is not part of everyday life outside them.
March to May and September to November — mild at Petra and in the desert, warm at the Dead Sea and Aqaba. October and November line up with Diwali and the autumn holidays and are close to ideal. Winter is cold and sometimes wet in Amman and Petra, with occasional snow, though the Dead Sea and Aqaba stay mild and everything is quiet. Summer is very hot in the south; it works only with dawn starts and a pool.
