When to go

When is your Hungary?

Shoulder
May · June · September
The Best Months

Warm days, long evenings, terraces open along the river and lavender on the Tihany peninsula in June. Fewer people than midsummer and noticeably cheaper. If you have a free choice, take these.

Summer
July – August
Lake Season

Balaton comes alive and Budapest fills with festivals, including Sziget in August. Also genuinely hot — the city can be draining in the middle of the day — and the busiest, priciest weeks of the year.

Autumn
October
Harvest and Cellars

The wine harvest in Tokaj, Eger and Villány, vineyard colour on the Balaton hills, and comfortable walking weather in the city. One of the most rewarding and least crowded times to come.

Winter
December – February
Steam and Markets

Cold, often below freezing, and the season the baths were built for — outdoor pools at Széchenyi with steam rising off the surface. Christmas markets run through December. January and February are the cheapest weeks of the year.

Before you book

Hungary visa — what you need to know

Hungary is in the Schengen area and Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa. Unlike several other Schengen missions, Hungary is jurisdiction-bound: the state you live in decides which Hungarian mission handles your application, and applying to the wrong one wastes the appointment.

Fee and processing, as the Embassy publishes them Hungary charges the common Schengen visa fee, paid at the VFS office by card at the time of the appointment. The Embassy does not publish a current rupee amount in a form we can quote reliably, so confirm the exact figure when you book rather than relying on a number quoted elsewhere — and note the Schengen fee is not refunded if an application is refused. On appeals the Embassy is specific: 15 days for a decision, 5 days where a visa is being annulled or revoked, submissions in Hungarian or another official EU language, and an appeal fee that is not reimbursed even on a positive decision. Fees and timeframes are set by the authorities and change. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities. On timing, be careful how the fifteen-day figure is read: it is the standard decision period, generally fifteen calendar days after an admissible application has been received, and it is not a guaranteed end-to-end visa timeline. Further scrutiny or consultation between Schengen states can extend it, and appointment availability, biometrics and passport return all add time on top. Apply well in advance rather than to the minimum — applications can generally be lodged up to six months before travel, and that is the end of the window to plan to.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes. The Embassy states that nationals of India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Bhutan can enter Hungary for a short stay only with a valid C Schengen visa. Applications go through VFS Global, and Hungary describes the allowance as a maximum of 90 days in total within a 180-day period counted from the date of first entry. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.
No, and this is the most important practical difference from some other Schengen missions in India. Hungary is jurisdiction-bound. The Embassy in New Delhi publishes a consular district covering Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, West Bengal, the north-eastern states, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Sikkim, Chandigarh and Ladakh. Residents of the remaining states apply through the Consulate General in Mumbai. Check your state before booking anything.
Hungary specifies the source as well as the cover: travel insurance from the list of the GI Council, covering the full duration of the trip including the return journey. A policy from an insurer outside that list puts the application at risk no matter how good the cover is. The Schengen-wide minimum is €30,000, valid across the Schengen area for the whole stay.
No, and Hungary says so more directly than most. The Embassy states that the visa is only a preliminary permission for entering the country and does not automatically authorise its bearer to enter — a traveller may be asked at the border to prove they meet the conditions of entry and stay, and may be returned from the border if they cannot. Keep your accommodation bookings, insurance and evidence of funds in your hand luggage.
The Hungarian forint, written HUF or Ft. Hungary is in the European Union but has not adopted the euro. Some tourist businesses quote prices in euro at poor rates. Use bank ATMs rather than the exchange booths near the main sights — those are among the worst-value in Europe — and always decline the machine's offer to charge you in rupees.
They are the single most distinctive thing Hungary offers, and Budapest sits over more than a hundred thermal springs. Széchenyi is the large one with the famous outdoor pools, at its best on a freezing winter evening. Gellért is the grand art nouveau option. Rudas is a working Ottoman bath still under its sixteenth-century dome. Take flip-flops and a towel, and check whether the pool you want requires a swimming cap.
May, June and September are the best all-round months — warm, long evenings and fewer crowds. October is excellent for the wine harvest in Tokaj and Eger. July and August are hot and busy, though that is when Lake Balaton is at its best. Winter is cold but cheap, with Christmas markets in December and the baths at their most atmospheric.
Three or four nights covers Budapest properly, including a bath and the Parliament. Five to seven lets you add wine country at Eger or Tokaj, Lake Balaton, or the Danube Bend towns — all short journeys from the capital. The common mistake is two nights in Budapest as a stopover, which sees the panorama and nothing else.
