When to go

When is your Netherlands?

Spring
Late March – mid May
Tulip Season

The country's signature window. Keukenhof opens for roughly eight weeks and the bulb fields around it colour up, though peak bloom moves with the weather and cannot be promised. King's Day on 27 April turns the whole country orange. Book early — this is peak.

Summer
June – August
Long Days by the Water

The warmest and brightest months, with terraces open, canal boats running late and the North Sea beaches in use. Amsterdam is at its busiest; the coast, the islands and the eastern provinces absorb it far better.

Autumn
September – October
Quiet and Golden

Mild, noticeably emptier and often the best-value time to come. Museums without queues, colour in the parks, and cycling weather that still works. Rain becomes more frequent as October goes on.

Winter
November – February
Dark, Wet and Cheap

Short days, grey skies and wind off the North Sea, with Christmas markets and Amsterdam's light festival as compensation. The cheapest and quietest season, and a good one for a museum-led trip if you accept the weather.

Before you book

Netherlands visa — what you need to know

The Netherlands is in the Schengen area and Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa. One Dutch rule matters more than any other: the application window closes far earlier than most Schengen countries, and missing it means missing the trip.

Fee and processing, as the Dutch service publishes them The Netherlands charges the common Schengen consular fee, and states that VFS Global service costs are always payable in addition. The current consular amount is published on the Dutch service's own fees page for India and moves with exchange rates, so confirm both figures when you book rather than relying on a number quoted elsewhere — this page does not print one it cannot verify. On timing, applications may be lodged up to six months before travel, and the Dutch service asks for at least 15 days before the travel date. Fees and timeframes are set by the authorities and change. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities. On timing, be careful how the fifteen-day figure is read: it is the standard decision period, generally fifteen calendar days after an admissible application has been received, and it is not a guaranteed end-to-end visa timeline. Further scrutiny or consultation between Schengen states can extend it, and appointment availability, biometrics and passport return all add time on top. Apply well in advance rather than to the minimum — applications can generally be lodged up to six months before travel, and that is the end of the window to plan to.

Before you book

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes. The Netherlands is in the Schengen area and Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa, allowing up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Applications are lodged at VFS Global centres in twelve Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Pune, Chandigarh, Cochin, Jalandhar and Lucknow. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.
You can apply up to six months before your trip, and the Dutch government asks that you apply at least 15 days before the date you travel. Six months is when the window opens; fifteen days is the minimum lead time it asks you to leave. Work backwards from your travel date, and give yourself considerably more than the minimum — appointments, biometrics and passport return all take time.
Yes. The Dutch service states you must appear in person to submit your application even if you are under 18. Fingerprints are taken only from applicants aged 12 and over, so a younger child attends but is not fingerprinted. A family also needs a separate appointment for each person rather than one appointment for the group, so secure enough slots.
You pay the common Schengen consular fee plus VFS Global service costs, which the Dutch service states are always payable. The current consular amount is published on the Dutch service's own fees page for India and moves with exchange rates, so confirm both figures when you book. The Dutch service also advises booking your appointment yourself rather than through an intermediary, to avoid unnecessary extra costs.
Yes, and it comes from the Dutch service itself rather than from rumour. Its India page warns about romance scamming and states plainly that the embassy never requests anyone to deposit application or visa fees into any bank account. If you are asked to transfer money to a personal or company account for a visa, it is fraud. Fees are paid through the official channel at the visa application centre.
Keukenhof opens for roughly eight weeks from late March to mid-May, and the commercial bulb fields around Lisse colour up during the same window. Peak bloom shifts with the weather each year and cannot be guaranteed in advance, so build in flexibility rather than booking for one specific weekend. Cycle between the fields rather than taking a coach, and never step into them — they are working crops.
Go elsewhere. Amsterdam deserves three days, but Haarlem is 20 minutes away, Utrecht half an hour, Rotterdam and The Hague around forty minutes, and Delft a little more. The country is small enough that you can keep one hotel and see four or five cities. Amsterdam is also under genuine visitor pressure, and the surrounding towns are cheaper and calmer.
Not reliably. The Netherlands is heavily cashless but many shops, supermarkets and cafés accept only Dutch domestic debit cards and will decline foreign credit cards outright. It surprises visitors more than almost anything else. Carry some euro cash, expect the occasional refusal, and check before ordering in smaller places.
