When is your Vietnam?
The best window for Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh — dry, comfortable and clear. January and February turn cool and misty; Ha Long can lose its views for days. Spring, from March, brings warmth and the terraces are flooded for planting.
Sapa and Mu Cang Chai are at their greenest in the summer rains and turn gold as the rice ripens in September and early October. Summer in the mountains is far cooler than the plains below.
Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An are driest and sunniest in this window, with the heat building from May. From September to December the central coast takes the monsoon, and Hoi An's streets can flood.
Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong and Phu Quoc are warm all year; this is the dry, settled half. From May to November afternoon downpours are routine but short, and prices are lower.
Tet is the biggest holiday of the year and the whole country travels home for it. Transport fills, many restaurants and shops close for several days and prices rise. Cities empty and turn festive; plan around it rather than into it.

Vietnam visa — what you need to know
Indian passport holders need a visa for Vietnam, and for a holiday the practical route is the e-visa, applied for and paid for online through Vietnam's official e-visa portal (evisa.gov.vn), the Immigration Department's own portal. There is no embassy visit for the e-visa and the result is delivered by email.
Fee and validity, as the portal publishes them Vietnam's official e-visa portal (evisa.gov.vn) publishes the e-visa as valid for a maximum of 90 days, single or multiple entry, with a fee of 25 US dollars for single entry and 50 US dollars for multiple entry, paid online and not refunded if the visa is refused. It is issued to applicants outside Vietnam and used only at designated border gates. The portal publishes its own processing time; we do not quote one because it changes and should not be planned against from a third-party page. Apply well in advance rather than to the minimum, and confirm the current position with the Embassy of Viet Nam in New Delhi if anything about your passport or your trip is unusual. Fees and rules are set by the Vietnamese authorities and change; final decisions remain with them.
