When to go

When is your Sweden?

Summer
June – August
Islands and Endless Light

The archipelago comes alive, the whole country moves outdoors and evenings stretch until nearly midnight in the south. Midsummer in late June is the biggest date in the calendar — and much of Sweden shuts for the weekend, so plan around it rather than into it.

Aurora
Late September – late March
Northern Lights Season

Long dark nights bring the aurora to Swedish Lapland, with Abisko known for unusually clear skies. Also the season for dog-sledding, the Icehotel and snow-covered forest — but daylight in the far north is very short at midwinter and it is genuinely cold.

Autumn
September – October
Colour and Quiet

Forest colour, mushroom and berry season under the right of public access, and sharply lower prices. Late September also gives the first realistic aurora nights while there is still usable daylight — often the best-value weeks of the year.

Spring
April – May
Slow Thaw

The south greens up and daylight lengthens fast, but the north can still be under snow well into May and many archipelago services have not started. Cheap and quiet, though the country is between seasons rather than in one.

Sweden visa — what you need to know

Sweden is in the Schengen area and Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa. The Swedish process is straightforward, but the published timeframe has a much longer tail than most, and it is worth planning to the tail rather than the average.

Fee and processing, as the Embassy publishes them Sweden charges the common Schengen visa fee, with a VFS Global service fee published at €19 inclusive of service tax per application on top. The Embassy publishes current amounts on its own fees page and the rupee equivalent moves with exchange rates, so confirm the figure at booking rather than relying on one quoted elsewhere. On timing the Embassy is unusually complete: decisions are generally made within 15 days of submission, may be extended to a maximum of 45 calendar days where further scrutiny is needed, and in exceptional cases may take up to 60 days. Fees and timeframes are set by the authorities and change. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities. On timing, be careful how the fifteen-day figure is read: it is the standard decision period, generally fifteen calendar days after an admissible application has been received, and it is not a guaranteed end-to-end visa timeline. Further scrutiny or consultation between Schengen states can extend it, and appointment availability, biometrics and passport return all add time on top. Apply well in advance rather than to the minimum — applications can generally be lodged up to six months before travel, and that is the end of the window to plan to.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes. Sweden is in the Schengen area and Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa. Applications are presented in person at VFS Global, with centres in New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Ahmedabad — and Sweden also allows applications directly at the Embassy in New Delhi, which several Schengen missions no longer do. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.
Usually about two weeks, but the published tail is long. The Embassy states decisions are generally made within 15 days of submission, may be extended to a maximum of 45 calendar days in individual cases needing further scrutiny, and in exceptional cases may take up to 60 days. That sixty-day figure is the longest ceiling published by any Schengen mission covered on this site — it will not apply to most applications, but plan against it if your bookings cannot be changed.
The common Schengen visa fee, plus a VFS Global service fee that Sweden publishes as €19 inclusive of service tax per application. Sweden is one of only two missions covered here that names the service fee amount rather than simply noting one applies. The visa fee's rupee equivalent moves with exchange rates, so confirm the current figure when you book.
Only up to a point, and it is worth knowing why. VFS Global receives Schengen applications, but it is the Swedish authorities who process the file and make the decision. The visa centre can tell you where your passport physically is, but it cannot influence the outcome or speed up a decision that is under further scrutiny.
They are different holidays. Summer, roughly June to August, gives the archipelago, swimming, long evening light and the midnight sun in the far north, and it is when the country is most alive. Late September to late March is aurora season in Swedish Lapland, with Abisko known for unusually clear skies, plus dog-sledding and the Icehotel. Decide this before booking anything — it changes the destination as much as the packing.
No. The aurora depends on solar activity and clear skies, and no operator or itinerary can guarantee it — be cautious of anyone who implies otherwise. What improves the odds is going between late September and late March, basing yourself well inside the aurora zone such as Abisko or Kiruna, and allowing three or four nights rather than one so a cloudy evening does not end the attempt.
Midsummer, in late June, is the most important date in the Swedish calendar — maypoles, flowers, herring and celebrations that go on well into a night that never fully darkens. It is wonderful to witness, but much of the country genuinely closes for the weekend: shops, restaurants and some transport all reduce. Either build your trip around experiencing it, or avoid that weekend for practical sightseeing.
Barely any. Sweden is among the most cashless societies in the world — cards are accepted everywhere including on buses, in cafés and at market stalls, and a great many businesses no longer accept cash at all. A card is all you need. Note also that Sweden is in the European Union but uses the krona, not the euro, so euros are of no use either.
