When to go to China
Mild and clear across most of the country, with blossom in the north and comfortable walking weather at the Wall and in Xi’an. Avoid the Labour Day holiday in the first week of May, when domestic travel peaks.
Generally the best window of the year — dry, clear and comfortable, with autumn colour in the north. Avoid the first week of October entirely: Golden Week is the largest domestic travel period on Earth.
Hot and humid in the east and south, with the rainy season affecting the Yangtze basin. Good for the far west and the grasslands, and the school-holiday window for Indian families, but crowded at the headline sites.
Cold and dry in the north — Beijing can be well below freezing — but the sites are quiet and the Wall in snow is exceptional. Avoid Chinese New Year, when the country effectively stops moving for visitors.

China entry — plan the visa first
The L visa is the tourist category. Applications are made in person at a Chinese Visa Application Service Centre in Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata, cost roughly ₹4,900 all in, and take about four to six working days. The requirement that changes how you plan is documentary: the application needs confirmed flight tickets, confirmed hotel bookings, a day-by-day itinerary and six months of bank statements. A typical grant is thirty days per entry with ninety days’ validity from issue.
Processing time About four to six working days once submitted. Because confirmed bookings are required up front, allow several weeks between starting to plan and departing.
