When to go

When is your Estonia?

Summer
June – August
White Nights

The obvious answer. Light until nearly midnight around midsummer, the islands and coast open, Pärnu's beach season running and Tallinn's courtyards full. Warm rather than hot, and the busiest and priciest weeks — Jaanipäev at midsummer is the biggest date in the calendar.

Shoulder
May · September
Long Light, Fewer People

Still generous daylight without the peak. May brings the forests into leaf and September brings mushroom and berry season, which Estonians take seriously. Lower prices, most things still running, and the bogs at their best for walking.

Autumn
October – November
Colour and Quiet

Forest colour, empty coast roads and the cheapest months of the year. Daylight shortens fast and island ferry timetables thin out, but Tallinn is comfortable and the museums and saunas come into their own.

Winter
December – March
Markets, Snow and Sauna

December is the Christmas market and it is genuinely special. January and February are cold, snowy and very dark — good for sauna, snowshoeing and an empty Old Town, but not for island-hopping. Pack for real cold rather than European winter.

Estonia visa — what you need to know

Estonia is in the Schengen area and Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa. One thing is worth clearing up first, because it is widely got wrong: Estonia issues its own visas in India rather than being represented by another country.

Fee and processing, as the Ministry publishes them The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes the Schengen visa fee as €90 for adults, €45 for children aged six to eleven and free for children under six, with the visa application centre's service fee charged separately. Applications cannot be lodged earlier than six months before the journey and must be submitted at least fifteen days before it — that later date is an administrative cut-off, not a recommended time to apply. On the decision itself, the Ministry states that a decision is taken within fifteen days from the date the application has been considered admissible, and that this may be extended to forty-five days where further examination or additional documents are required. The admissibility wording is the important part: the clock starts when the file is accepted as complete, not when you hand it over, so a document query delays the start rather than running alongside it. That figure is a standard decision period and it is not a guaranteed end-to-end visa timeline — appointment availability, the in-person biometric visit, any further scrutiny or consultation and the return of your passport all sit outside it. Apply well in advance rather than to the minimum. Fees and timeframes are set by the authorities and change; confirm both when you apply. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes. Estonia is in the Schengen area and Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa. Estonia issues its own visas in India through its Embassy in New Delhi, which has processed applications since October 2013, with VFS Global receiving them. All applications must be submitted in person. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.
No, and it is worth being clear because the claim circulates widely. Estonia does rely on other countries' representation in a number of places, and the Sweden arrangement with a VFS centre in Kathmandu belongs to Nepal — but India is not on the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs' list of countries where Estonia is represented by another state. Applying through the wrong mission wastes an appointment, so go to Estonia's own Embassy in New Delhi.
Estonia publishes two different fifteen-day figures and they are not the same thing. An application must be lodged at least fifteen days before the journey — an administrative cut-off, not a recommended date. Separately, a decision is taken within fifteen days from the date the application is considered admissible, which may extend to forty-five days if further examination or documents are needed. The admissibility wording matters: a file waiting on a missing document has not started its clock. Add appointment availability, the biometric visit and passport return, and plan on months rather than weeks.
The Ministry publishes €90 for adults and €45 for children aged six to eleven, with children under six exempt. The visa application centre charges a separate service fee, confirmed when you book. Travel medical insurance must cover at least €30,000 and be valid across all Schengen member states — check the certificate names the whole area and covers your actual dates, not just the amount.
Not under twelve. All applicants attend in person, and at the appointment a photograph and ten digitally scanned fingerprints are taken — but children under twelve are exempt from the fingerprinting, as are people for whom it is physically impossible. Consular officers may also interview an applicant by telephone or ask them to attend in person if anything needs clarifying.
June to August for the white nights, the islands and the coast — light lingers until nearly midnight around midsummer. May and September are the best value, with long daylight and far fewer people; September also brings mushroom and berry season, which Estonians take seriously. December is the Christmas market, genuinely atmospheric but dark by mid-afternoon. January and February are cold and snowy and not the season for island-hopping.
Tallinn deserves two or three nights and the Old Town is the real thing rather than a reconstruction. But the country outside the walls is the better half: the bogs of Lahemaa on boardwalks, the islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa, and Tartu in the south. Estonia is small enough that adding any of these costs a couple of hours of travel, and the difference in the trip is considerable.
Very naturally. Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius sit roughly four to five hours apart by coach, and the three countries make an obvious circuit that many travellers do in ten to twelve nights. They are genuinely distinct — different languages, different architecture, different histories — so it does not feel repetitive. If you do combine them, apply for your Schengen visa to the country where you will spend the most days.
