When to go

Kenya through the year

Peak
June – October
Long dry season

The best game viewing of the year. Vegetation thins, animals concentrate around water, and the wildebeest herds are usually in the Mara ecosystem during these months. It is also the busiest and most expensive period, and camps are booked far ahead.

Excellent
January – February
Short dry season

Hot, clear and much quieter than the mid-year peak. Game viewing is very good, calving begins in the southern ecosystems, and rates are lower than in the high season.

Green season
March – May
Long rains

Heavy afternoon rain, deep green landscapes and far fewer vehicles. Some camps close and unsealed roads can become difficult, but birdlife is exceptional and prices are at their lowest.

Shoulder
November – December
Short rains

Brief showers, usually in the afternoon, with good game viewing in between. A reasonable compromise between price and conditions, though the late-December holidays are busy and priced accordingly.

Before you book

Kenya Visa — What You Need to Know

Kenya replaced its visa system with the eTA, and every visitor now applies online before departure rather than on arrival. Apply well ahead of travel, and carry your approval with your travel documents. Requirements, fees and processing times are set by Kenyan immigration and change without notice.

How far ahead The eTA is applied for online and must be approved before you fly — airlines check it at boarding. Kenyan immigration sets processing times and does not publish them as a guarantee, so apply well ahead of departure rather than in the final days. Confirm the current position on the official Kenyan eTA portal before you book, and again before you travel.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Kenya no longer issues traditional visas. Indian passport holders apply online for an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) before travelling, and must be approved before departure — there is no visa on arrival. Requirements and fees are set by Kenyan immigration and change without notice, so confirm the current position on the official eTA portal before booking.
June to October is the strongest game-viewing window and the busiest. January and February are hot, clear and much quieter, with very good game viewing. March to May brings the long rains — green, cheap and far emptier, with some camps closed.
The herds are usually in the Mara ecosystem between roughly July and October, but the migration follows rainfall rather than a schedule, and river crossings are unpredictable even within those months. We plan routes to give you the best chance in the time you have. Nobody can guarantee a crossing, and you should be wary of anyone who does.
Seven to nine nights is the practical minimum for two or three parks without spending the trip in transit. Adding the coast takes it to ten or twelve.
Yes, and game drives hold attention better than most sightseeing. Many camps set a minimum age and family accommodation is limited, so both need checking early — it is usually the availability that shapes a family itinerary rather than the route.
Much of Kenya carries malaria risk and prophylaxis is commonly advised. Yellow fever certification is a recurring requirement on Africa routes in both directions. Speak to a travel clinic well before departure — advice depends on your exact route, the season and your own health, and it is not something to take from a website.
Mostly by scheduled light aircraft, which turns a long drive into a short hop and keeps the time on game drives. Luggage is limited and must be a soft bag. Road transfers are used for the Rift Valley lakes, where the drive is short and scenic.
Vegetarian food is straightforward — Nairobi has a long-established Indian community and safari camps cater for it routinely. Stricter Jain requirements are usually possible with notice. Tell us when you enquire and we confirm it with each property in writing rather than assuming.
