When to go to Laos
The best window — warm days, cool evenings and clear skies. Ideal for Luang Prabang, the falls and river travel. Book ahead around New Year.
Hot, and complicated by agricultural burning across the north which can cause significant haze from roughly March into April, obscuring views and affecting air quality. Pi Mai, Lao New Year, falls in mid-April.
Afternoon rain rather than all-day downpours. The countryside is green, the waterfalls are at full flow and visitor numbers are low. Some rural roads become difficult.

Laos entry — on arrival or online
Visa on arrival is available to Indian nationals at the main international airports and designated land borders. The fee is between USD 30 and USD 45 depending on the entry point and must be paid in cash. It grants a thirty-day stay and is extendable. The alternative is the official eVisa, applied for online at USD 35, issued in about three business days, valid for sixty days from issue for a maximum stay of thirty days.
Which route Visa on arrival takes roughly thirty minutes to an hour at the airport. The eVisa removes that queue and is worth it if you are arriving late or connecting onward the same day.
