When to go

When is your Germany?

Summer
June – August
Long Days, Everything Open

Beer gardens, lake swimming, open-air concerts and long evenings. Alpine trails and castle grounds are all accessible, and the Baltic has a genuine beach season. Busiest and priciest, and cities can get uncomfortably hot.

Shoulder
May · September
The Best Compromise

Warm without the crowds, gardens at their best in May, and September adds the start of the wine harvest along the Rhine and Moselle. If you have a free choice, take these weeks.

Autumn
Late September – October
Harvest and Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest runs from late September into early October and fills Munich completely — book months ahead or avoid the city entirely. Elsewhere it is vineyard colour, wine festivals and comfortable walking.

Winter
Late November – February
Markets, Then Quiet

Christmas markets run from late November to Christmas Eve and are the reason many people come. January and February are cold, grey and cheap, with skiing in the Bavarian Alps and museums at their emptiest.

German visa — what you need to know

Germany is in the Schengen area, so Indian passport holders travel on a Schengen visa. Two things set the German process apart: every application lodged anywhere in India is decided in Mumbai, and Germany applies an easier multi-entry rule to Indian nationals than the standard Schengen one.

Fee and processing, as the Missions publish them Germany charges the common Schengen visa fee set by the EU Visa Code — €90 for adults and €45 for children aged six to eleven — and the German Missions publish the current rupee equivalent, which moves with the exchange rate; confirm it when you apply rather than relying on a figure quoted elsewhere. The VFS service charge is separate and is taken when the appointment is booked. On timing, the Missions state that processing can take up to two weeks and longer in individual cases, and that the clock starts only when the file reaches the Consulate General in Mumbai, which may take up to six working days. Fees and timeframes are set by the authorities and change. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities. On timing, be careful how the fifteen-day figure is read: it is the standard decision period, generally fifteen calendar days after an admissible application has been received, and it is not a guaranteed end-to-end visa timeline. Further scrutiny or consultation between Schengen states can extend it, and appointment availability, biometrics and passport return all add time on top. Apply well in advance rather than to the minimum — applications can generally be lodged up to six months before travel, and that is the end of the window to plan to.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes. Germany is in the Schengen area and Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa. Applications are lodged with VFS Global, and the German Missions state you may submit at any VFS centre across India regardless of where you live, because the application is forwarded to the German Consulate General Mumbai for a decision. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.
Possibly, and Germany applies a more generous rule to Indian nationals than the Schengen standard. The standard cascade requires three correctly used Schengen visas in the past two years to qualify for a one-year multi-entry visa. Germany announced it will issue a C2 two-year visa where you hold two lawfully used Schengen visas from the past three years. It sits under Article 24(2) of the EU Visa Code and is discretionary, so it is worth presenting your travel history clearly rather than assuming it will be spotted.
The Missions state processing can take up to two weeks and even longer in individual cases — but the figure that catches people out is that the clock starts only once your application reaches the Consulate in Mumbai, which may itself take up to six working days depending on delivery and public holidays. Applications can be lodged six months before travel, so apply early and count both stages.
The German Missions accept Indian travel medical insurance only from approved Indian travel insurance companies, so the identity of your insurer matters as much as the cover. Check yours against the Missions' current approved list before buying the policy. The Schengen-wide minimum cover is €30,000, valid across the Schengen area for the whole of your stay.
Yes, almost everywhere, including supermarkets, and it surprises more visitors than any other German rule. Plan food shopping for Saturday. Railway station shops, petrol stations, bakeries in some regions, and restaurants stay open, and tourist attractions are generally unaffected — but if you need a pharmacy or a supermarket on a Sunday you will be hunting.
More cash than you expect. Germany is noticeably more cash-oriented than the Netherlands, Scandinavia or the UK, and small bakeries, cafés, market stalls and some restaurants still take cash only. Cards work in hotels, supermarkets and larger shops. Carry euro notes and coins, and remember the Pfand deposit charged on most drink bottles is refunded when you return them.
They answer different questions. Berlin is for twentieth-century history, museums and a distinctive, informal city culture, and it is the cheapest major capital in Western Europe. Munich is the gateway to the Alps, Neuschwanstein and Bavarian beer-hall culture, and is noticeably more expensive and more traditional. With seven nights you can reasonably do both, connected by a fast ICE train.
May and September are the best all-round months — warm, long days and fewer crowds than midsummer. June to August is the peak, with beer gardens, lake swimming and a genuine Baltic beach season. Late September into early October is Oktoberfest, which fills Munich completely. Late November to Christmas Eve is Christmas market season, cold and dark but at its most atmospheric.
