When to go

When is your Latvia?

Summer
June – August
Long Light and the Coast

The obvious answer and the busiest. Light until late, Jūrmala's beach season running, the Gauja valley in full leaf and Riga's courtyards and terraces open. Jāņi at midsummer is the biggest date in the Latvian year and the whole country leaves the cities for it — plan around it rather than into it.

Shoulder
May · September
The Value Months

Long daylight without the peak crowds or the peak prices. May brings the forests and parks into leaf; September brings mushroom season, which Latvians take as seriously as their neighbours do, and a coast you can have to yourself. The best all-round compromise.

Autumn
October – November
Colour and Quiet

The Gauja valley turns and the cheapest months of the year arrive. Daylight shortens quickly and the coastal towns wind down, but Riga is comfortable, the museums and the market are indoors anyway, and hotel rates fall sharply.

Winter
December – March
Markets, Snow and Dark

December brings Christmas markets to the old town squares and Riga looks its best under snow. January and February are cold, dark by mid-afternoon and genuinely quiet — good for a city break with saunas and long lunches, poor for the coast or the countryside.

Latvia visa — what you need to know

Latvia is in the Schengen area and Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa. Applications are lodged at the joint visa application centres run by VFS Global and forwarded to the Embassy of Latvia in New Delhi, which assesses them itself.

Fee and processing, as the embassy publishes them The Embassy of Latvia in New Delhi publishes the Schengen visa fee as €90 for an adult and €45 for a child aged six to eleven, with the visa application centre's service fee charged separately, and requires travel medical insurance of €30,000 covering urgent medical attention and emergency hospital treatment throughout the Schengen area. On timing, the embassy publishes two figures that do not agree with each other. Its visa page states that applications shall be decided on within fifteen calendar days of the date of the lodging of an application, extendable to forty-five calendar days in individual cases. Its consular information page states that the service aims to deliver within ten days calculated from the date the embassy receives the application, and up to thirty days where additional documents are requested or an interview is scheduled. Both are official, and where an authority's own pages conflict the shorter number is not the one to plan around — particularly here, because the ten-day count begins when the embassy receives the file rather than when you lodge it at the application centre, so the journey between the two is outside it altogether. Applications may be lodged no earlier than six months before the intended visit and no later than fifteen calendar days before it, and that later date is an administrative cut-off rather than a recommended time to apply. Whichever figure you take, it is a standard decision period and it is not a guaranteed end-to-end visa timeline — appointment availability, the in-person biometric visit, any further scrutiny or consultation and the return of your passport all sit outside it. Apply well in advance rather than to the minimum. Fees and timeframes are set by the authorities and change; confirm both when you apply. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes. Latvia is in the Schengen area and Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa. Applications are lodged at the joint visa application centres operated by VFS Global and forwarded to the Embassy of Latvia in New Delhi, which assesses them. All applicants attend in person to give biometric data. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.
The embassy publishes two different answers on its own website, and it is important to know that before you book anything. Its visa page says applications shall be decided within fifteen calendar days of the date of lodging, extendable to forty-five calendar days in individual cases. Its consular page says the service aims for ten days calculated from the date the embassy receives the application, and up to thirty days if documents are requested or an interview is scheduled. Plan against the longer figure. The ten-day version is also measured from when the embassy receives the file rather than from when you lodge it, so it excludes the transfer from the application centre entirely.
Applications open six months before the start of the intended visit, and the deadline for accepting one is fifteen calendar days before it. Treat the six-month point as when to begin and that deadline as the last moment the file can be accepted rather than a target — it is the last moment the file can be accepted, not a sensible time to hand it over. Add appointment availability, the biometric visit and the return of your passport, and the sensible plan is months rather than weeks.
The embassy publishes €90 for adults and €45 for children aged six to eleven. There is also a reduced €35 rate for nationals of countries covered by an EU visa facilitation agreement, which does not apply to Indian passport holders, so budget the full €90. The visa application centre charges its own service fee on top, confirmed when you book. Insurance must provide €30,000 of cover for urgent medical attention and emergency hospital treatment across the Schengen area.
Not under twelve. Every applicant in India appears in person to provide biometric data — fingerprints and a digital photograph — but children under twelve are exempt from the fingerprinting, as are certain other categories. They still attend the appointment. If fingerprints were given for a previous Schengen visa within the permitted period they may be reused, which the centre will confirm at booking.
Three nights in Riga covers the old town, the Art Nouveau quarter and the Central Market without rushing. Five to six nights lets you add either the coast at Jūrmala and Cape Kolka, or the Gauja valley castles at Sigulda and Cēsis, or Kuldīga and Courland in the west. Most travellers pair Latvia with Estonia and Lithuania and give the three of them ten to twelve nights together.
June to August for long light, the beach at Jūrmala and the river valley in full leaf — bearing in mind that Jāņi at midsummer empties the cities and closes a lot of the country for a couple of days. May and September are the best value, with generous daylight, far fewer people and, in September, mushroom season. December brings Christmas markets to Riga. January and February are cold and dark and suit a city break rather than a tour.
Yes, and it is the most common mistake made with Latvia. Riga is the largest city in the Baltic states, its historic centre is UNESCO-listed, and the reason for that listing is as much the Art Nouveau quarter beyond the old town as the Hanseatic core inside it — whole streets of it, which takes a proper half day to see. Add the Central Market in its zeppelin hangars and three days is comfortable.
