Two monsoons, one island
The peak window. Galle, Mirissa, Bentota and the hill country are dry and clear, whale watching runs off Mirissa, and the cultural triangle is comfortable. Also the busiest and priciest period on the south coast.
While the southwest is wet, Trincomalee, Pasikuda and Arugam Bay are at their driest and calmest. Arugam Bay is a surf destination in these months, and the Kandy Esala Perahera falls in this window.
Inter-monsoon months with short, heavy afternoon storms rather than continuous rain. Fewer visitors, greener landscapes, and generally the best value — but plan around showers rather than through them.
Wet on the south and west coasts. The cultural triangle and the east stay largely workable, so a north-and-east itinerary still succeeds while the classic south-coast route does not.

Sri Lanka entry — free for Indians
Since 25 May 2026 Indian nationals receive a free 30-day tourist ETA covering tourism, family visits and short business trips, with double entry permitted — so you may leave and re-enter once inside the thirty days. Visa on arrival remains available at Bandaranaike International Airport, but applying online at eta.gov.lk before you fly saves queuing at immigration.
Extensions Travellers on the free ETA who wish to stay beyond thirty days may apply for an extension on payment of the applicable fee.
