When to go

When is your Iceland?

Summer
June – August
The Midnight Sun

Near-endless daylight, every road open including the highlands, puffins ashore and the whole Ring Road realistic. It is also the busiest and most expensive stretch, and the aurora is impossible — the sky never gets dark enough.

Shoulder
May · September
The Best Compromise

Long days without peak crowds, most roads open, and by late September the nights are dark enough for aurora while the weather is still reasonable. The single best trade-off in the Icelandic calendar.

Winter
Late Sep – March
Aurora and Ice Caves

The dark months: northern lights possible, blue ice caves open, snow on the black sand. Daylight is only a few hours around midsummer's opposite, the highlands are shut, and driving conditions change by the hour.

Spring
April – early May
Thaw and Fewer People

Prices and crowds are lower, waterfalls are heavy with meltwater, and daylight is already long. Some highland routes are still closed and the weather is genuinely unsettled.

Any Month
Year-round
Weather Beats the Calendar

Iceland's weather changes faster than its seasons. A June day can be horizontal rain and a February day can be still and clear. Build slack into the itinerary and check the official forecast and road conditions each morning.

Before you book

Iceland visa — what you need to know

Iceland is part of the Schengen area, so Indian passport holders travel there on a Schengen visa rather than an Icelandic one. What matters is which country you apply to, and that is decided by your itinerary rather than by preference.

Fee and processing, as published The Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs publishes the visa application fee as EUR 90, and EUR 45 for children aged six to twelve. It states that an application generally has to be handed in in person, and that where all required documentation is submitted and nothing further is needed, processing takes approximately two weeks. Fees and processing are set by the authorities and change, so confirm both at the application centre before you travel. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities. On timing, be careful how the fifteen-day figure is read: it is the standard decision period, generally fifteen calendar days after an admissible application has been received, and it is not a guaranteed end-to-end visa timeline. Further scrutiny or consultation between Schengen states can extend it, and appointment availability, biometrics and passport return all add time on top. Apply well in advance rather than to the minimum — applications can generally be lodged up to six months before travel, and that is the end of the window to plan to.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes. Iceland is part of the Schengen area, and Indian passport holders require a Schengen visa to cross the Schengen external border. Ísland.is confirms that a uniform Schengen visa issued by any member state is valid for travel throughout the area for up to 90 days, so a valid Schengen visa you already hold covers Iceland too. If Iceland is your main destination, you apply to Iceland — and India is one of only four countries where an Icelandic embassy issues visas directly. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.
The Embassy of Iceland in New Delhi directs applicants to VFS Global in India to lodge their documents. Ísland.is explains the split clearly: the application centre receives the application, but the Embassy evaluates it and issues the visa. Applications can be lodged up to six months before travel, and the Embassy notes that securing a VFS appointment can take several days — so book the appointment before worrying about the paperwork.
It depends entirely on what you want to see, and there is no single answer. June to August brings near-endless daylight, open highland roads and puffins, but no northern lights at all — the sky never darkens. Late September to March is the aurora and ice-cave season, with only a few hours of daylight and unpredictable driving. May and September are the best compromise: long days, fewer people, and by late September dark enough for the lights.
No. The aurora is present year-round but is only visible against a dark sky, and Icelandic summer nights never get dark enough. If the northern lights are the reason for the trip, travel between late September and March, stay several nights, get away from town lighting, and treat a sighting as a possibility rather than a booking — no operator can promise one.
Five to six nights covers Reykjavík, the Golden Circle and the South Coast as far as the glacier lagoon without rushing. Eight to ten is what the full Ring Road actually needs; attempting it in less means spending the holiday driving. In winter, plan fewer things per day than feels natural — the daylight is short and the roads decide the pace.
It suits couples who want scale and quiet rather than beaches and nightlife. The usual shape is a few nights on the South Coast with lodges out in the landscape, geothermal bathing somewhere quieter than the busiest lagoons, and either the aurora or the midnight sun depending on the month. It is cinematic with very little effort, which is a rare combination.
For most trips, yes — there are no trains anywhere in the country, and a car is what makes the landscape reachable on your own timing. If you would rather not drive, small-group tours from Reykjavík cover the Golden Circle, the South Coast and aurora hunting perfectly well. If you do drive in winter, or plan to use the highland F-roads in summer, take the vehicle choice seriously: F-roads legally require a 4x4 and river crossings are excluded from standard rental insurance.
Iceland is a high-cost country by European standards, largely because almost everything is imported and labour is expensive. We do not publish prices on this page, because a figure quoted today would be wrong by the time you travel. Two things genuinely reduce cost without reducing the trip: the town swimming pools instead of the marquee lagoons, and guesthouses or farm stays instead of hotels. Tap water is excellent, so bottled water is money thrown away.
