When to go

When is your Spain?

Spring
April – June
The Best Months

Andalusia at its finest before the heat arrives, Madrid and Barcelona comfortable, and the north beginning to dry out. Seville's Feria and Córdoba's patios both fall in this window, so book early around them. If you have a free choice, take these weeks.

Summer
July – August
Coast Yes, Interior No

Seville and Córdoba regularly pass 40°C and sightseeing becomes genuinely difficult. The coasts and the north are excellent, the islands are at their peak, and many city restaurants close for August. Plan around the heat rather than through it.

Autumn
September – October
Warm Sea, Cooler Cities

Arguably the best all-round season: the Mediterranean is still warm, Andalusia becomes comfortable again, the grape harvest is on in Rioja, and prices and crowds both fall away.

Winter
November – March
Mild South, Warm Islands

Andalusia stays mild and the cities are at their cheapest and least crowded, with Christmas markets and Three Kings in early January. The north is wet, the centre is cold, and the Canaries remain warm enough for a beach holiday.

Before you book

Spain visa — what you need to know

Spain is in the Schengen area and Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa. Spain differs from every other country on this site in one immediately practical way: it does not use VFS Global in India.

Fee and processing, as the missions publish them Spain charges the common Schengen visa fee. The mission pages read for this guide did not publish a current rupee amount we can quote reliably, so confirm the figure at the point of booking rather than relying on one quoted elsewhere. Applications may be submitted from six months before the scheduled travel date and no later than fifteen days before it, a closing date that is a deadline rather than a target, and appointments are booked through BLS International rather than VFS Global. Under the common Visa Code a decision is normally taken within fifteen calendar days and may be extended where a case requires further examination or consultation with other Schengen states. Fees and timeframes are set by the authorities and change. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities. On timing, be careful how the fifteen-day figure is read: it is the standard decision period, generally fifteen calendar days after an admissible application has been received, and it is not a guaranteed end-to-end visa timeline. Further scrutiny or consultation between Schengen states can extend it, and appointment availability, biometrics and passport return all add time on top. Apply well in advance rather than to the minimum — applications can generally be lodged up to six months before travel, and that is the end of the window to plan to.

Before you book

The practical detail that makes Signature Journeys effortless — what to know before you go, from people who travel for a living.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes. Spain is in the Schengen area and Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa, allowing up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Applications may be submitted from six months before the scheduled travel date, and no later than fifteen days before it — a deadline rather than a target. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.
Because Spain does not use VFS Global in India. Appointments for Spanish Schengen and national visas are booked through BLS International instead. This is the single most common source of confusion for travellers who have previously applied to other Schengen countries — they check VFS out of habit, find nothing, and assume no appointments are available. Go to the Spanish visa service operated by BLS.
It depends on your state. The Consulate General in Mumbai covers Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and the union territories of Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu and Puducherry. The Embassy in New Delhi covers the rest, including Delhi NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, the north-eastern states and the union territories not listed above. Applying outside your jurisdiction wastes the appointment.
April to June and September to October are the best all-round months. Spring gives Andalusia at its finest before the heat, and autumn keeps the Mediterranean warm while the southern cities become comfortable again. July and August are excellent on the coasts and in the north but genuinely severe in Seville and Córdoba, which regularly pass 40°C. Winter is mild in the south and warm in the Canaries.
Later than almost anywhere else in Europe, and it is the biggest practical adjustment for most visitors. Lunch runs from about two to four and is the main meal of the day; dinner rarely starts before nine and often later. Kitchens genuinely close in between, so arriving at a restaurant at seven usually means waiting. Plan a late breakfast, a proper lunch and a snack in the early evening rather than fighting the schedule.
Months, and it is the ticket that should decide your dates rather than the other way round. Entry to the Nasrid Palaces is timed to the half hour with a strict capacity, and slots are taken far in advance in every season. Buy directly from the official ticketing service as soon as your dates are fixed, and bring the passport used for the booking, as identity is checked at entry.
Less than France, Italy or Switzerland, and noticeably so outside Barcelona and Madrid. Andalusia, Valencia and much of the north give very good value for food and accommodation, and the menú del día — a fixed-price set lunch — is one of the best-value meals in Europe. High-speed rail is where booking ahead makes the biggest difference; advance AVE fares are a fraction of walk-up prices.
Seven to nine nights for one thread done properly — commonly Madrid with Andalusia, or Barcelona with Valencia. Ten to twelve lets you combine north and south. Spain is larger and more varied than most visitors expect, and the mistake is treating Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Granada and San Sebastián as one week. The AVE network is fast, but each of those places deserves more than a night.
