When to go

When is your Nepal?

Best
Oct–Nov
The clear season

Post-monsoon air is washed clean and the mountain views are the sharpest of the year. Trails are busy, Dashain and Tihar fall in this window, and everything from Poon Hill to Everest Base Camp is at its best. Book accommodation and teahouses well ahead.

Best
Mar–Apr
Rhododendron spring

Warm days, long light and hillsides of rhododendron in flower. Slightly hazier than autumn but far quieter on the trails, and the low-altitude parks are comfortable before the heat builds.

Good
Dec–Feb
Cold and very clear

The valley is cold at night and high passes may close, but visibility is superb and the cultural sites are almost empty. Best for Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan and low-altitude walking rather than serious trekking.

Limited
Jun–Sep
Monsoon

Heavy rain, leeches on the trails and cloud hiding the peaks. The exception is Upper Mustang, which sits in the rain-shadow and is genuinely at its best while the rest of the country is under water.

Nepal entry — what Indians actually need

Under the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship, Indian citizens travel to Nepal without a visa, without a fee and without a visa-on-arrival process — expecting a visa counter is the most common source of confusion at Kathmandu airport, because there is not one for you. Immigration operates a dedicated counter for Indian nationals; you complete a short arrival card and pass through.

At the border Land crossings at Sunauli, Raxaul–Birgunj, Kakarbhitta and Banbasa are open to Indian nationals on the same terms as air arrivals, with the same document rules.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

No. Under the 1950 India–Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship, Indian citizens travel to Nepal without a visa and without any fee. There is no visa-on-arrival process to complete either — Kathmandu airport runs a dedicated counter for Indian nationals where you fill a short arrival card and pass through.
No. Aadhaar is not accepted as a travel document for Nepal, by air or at land borders. Carry a valid Indian passport, or an original voter ID card issued by the Election Commission of India. Photocopies, scans and digital copies of either are refused — the document must be the physical original.
Yes, within limits that changed recently. Nepal Rastra Bank confirmed on 24 July 2026 that ₹200 and ₹500 notes issued on or after 9 November 2016 may be carried, up to a combined ₹25,000 per person — reversing a ban that had been in place since January 2019. Pre-demonetisation ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes remain prohibited. A great deal of published advice is still out of date on this.
October and November give the clearest mountain views of the year, followed by March and April for rhododendron and warmer walking. December to February is cold but exceptionally clear and very quiet at the cultural sites. June to September is monsoon, when the peaks are hidden — except in Upper Mustang, which sits in the rain-shadow.
It depends entirely on the route. Ghorepani–Poon Hill is four to five days, tops out around 3,200 m and suits a reasonably fit first-timer walking a few hours a day between teahouses. Everest Base Camp is a different proposition: two weeks, altitudes above 5,000 m, and acclimatisation days that cannot be skipped.
Yes, if you keep it below altitude. Kathmandu Valley, Pokhara and Chitwan combine into a week that involves no trekking at all — temple squares, a boat on Phewa Lake, a sunrise at Sarangkot and jeep safaris for rhino. Road transfers are short, and nothing on that route creates an altitude problem.
Pashupatinath in Kathmandu is among the most significant Shiva sites anywhere. Muktinath, at around 3,800 m behind the Annapurnas, is important to both Hindus and Buddhists and is reachable by road or short flight. Janakpur in the Terai is revered as Sita’s birthplace, and Lumbini is the birthplace of the Buddha.
Five nights covers the Kathmandu Valley and Pokhara comfortably. Seven adds Chitwan and makes a well-balanced first visit. If you want to trek, allow eight or nine nights for Poon Hill including buffer days, and a full fortnight for anything in the Everest region.
