When to go

When is your Czech Republic?

Shoulder
May · September
The Best Months

Warm without being hot, long daylight, gardens and castle grounds open, and noticeably fewer people than midsummer. If you have a free choice, take these.

Summer
June – August
Warm and Busy

Long evenings, beer gardens, outdoor concerts and every castle open. Also the peak for crowds and prices in Prague and Český Krumlov, and occasionally uncomfortably hot in the city.

December
Late Nov – early Jan
Christmas Markets

A season of its own. Markets in Prague, Brno and Olomouc, cold and dark by mid-afternoon, and the one time the country looks exactly like the postcard. Book early.

Autumn
October
Wine and Colour

Moravian harvest, burgundy vineyards and autumn colour in Bohemian Switzerland. Cooler and quieter, with some rural attractions starting to reduce hours.

Winter
January – March
Cold and Quiet

Genuinely cold, sometimes snowy, and the cheapest time to visit. Prague is atmospheric and uncrowded; smaller towns and some castles close for the season.

Czech visa — what you need to know

The Czech Republic is in the Schengen area, so Indian passport holders travel on a Schengen visa. The Czech Embassy in New Delhi publishes two rules that catch Indian applicants out more than any other: how appointments are released, and whose travel insurance it will accept.

Fee and processing, as the Embassy publishes them The Embassy publishes the short-term Schengen visa fee as €90, and €45 for children from six and below twelve, and states that the rupee amounts shown alongside are updated monthly with the exchange rate. Cards are accepted at the Embassy and charged in Czech crowns or euro; cash is accepted in rupees. Processing normally takes up to 15 calendar days and may be extended to a maximum of 45 in individual cases. Fees and timeframes are set by the authorities and change — confirm both when you apply. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities. On timing, be careful how the fifteen-day figure is read: it is the standard decision period, generally fifteen calendar days after an admissible application has been received, and it is not a guaranteed end-to-end visa timeline. Further scrutiny or consultation between Schengen states can extend it, and appointment availability, biometrics and passport return all add time on top. Apply well in advance rather than to the minimum — applications can generally be lodged up to six months before travel, and that is the end of the window to plan to.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes. The Czech Republic is in the Schengen area, and Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa allowing up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Applicants legally residing in India apply at any VFS Global visa application centre — the Czech Embassy in New Delhi handles applications from India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.
Buying the wrong travel insurance. The Czech Embassy accepts travel medical insurance only from insurers on a published approved list of Indian companies, and states explicitly that other policies issued by Indian insurers are not accepted for the Schengen visa procedure. Minimum cover is €30,000 for the whole Schengen area and the whole stay. Check your insurer against the current list before buying the policy — it is the most common avoidable refusal.
The Embassy states that new appointment slots are released every second Monday of a month, for appointments in the following month — so the release date, not your flight date, is what to plan around. Applications may be lodged from six months before travel and no later than 15 days before, and because the file must reach the Embassy 15 days ahead, the Embassy strongly recommends applying at least three weeks before departure. Processing normally takes up to 15 calendar days and can extend to 45.
The Czech koruna, written CZK or Kč. The country is in the European Union but has not adopted the euro, and euros are not generally accepted outside a handful of tourist businesses at poor rates. Use bank ATMs rather than street exchange booths, especially in central Prague, and always decline the machine's offer to charge you in your own currency.
May and September are the best all-round months — warm, long days and far fewer people than midsummer. December is its own season for the Christmas markets, cold and dark early but at its most atmospheric. Summer is warm and busy; winter after the markets is cheap and quiet, though some rural castles close.
Six or seven nights is the comfortable shape: three or four in Prague and two or three elsewhere — Český Krumlov, the spa towns, or Brno and Moravia. Prague alone justifies three days. The mistake most first-timers make is spending the whole trip in the capital when the rest of the country is two hours away and considerably cheaper.
Yes, particularly out of high summer. Prague's Malá Strana below the castle has genuinely lovely small hotels, Český Krumlov is romantic once the day buses leave, and a spa hotel in Karlovy Vary makes an unhurried middle to the trip. May, September and December suit it best.
Very. Distances are short, trains are cheap and comfortable, and the attractions are active rather than passive — castles at Karlštejn and Krumlov, a boat ride through the Moravian Karst caves, and Prague's trams, which children tend to enjoy more than the museums. Portions are generous and eating out is inexpensive.
