Papanasam Beach
A beach with ritual significance below the cliff, where ashes are traditionally immersed.
Papanasam Beach, Varkala
The beach below the Varkala cliff, and an active Hindu pilgrimage site whose name means "washing away of sins". Mineral springs run down the cliff onto the sand, and last rites and ancestral ceremonies are performed here daily. It is a working religious place that happens also to be a beach — and visitors are welcome provided they understand that order of priority.

Practical tips
Etiquette & safety
- Ceremonies and mourners must not be photographed. This is not a photo opportunity
- Dress modestly on the beach, particularly near the ritual area
- Keep to the southern end for swimming and sunbathing
- Strong undertow — drownings occur most years. Swim where others swim, in daylight, never after drinking
- Lifeguard cover is not comprehensive along the whole beach
- Do not enter the water during ceremonies
