Why Zambia

The country that
invented walking safaris

Zambia is where guiding as a craft is taken most seriously. The walking safari was developed in South Luangwa, and it remains the country's signature: no vehicle, an armed scout and a guide, and animals approached on foot at their eye level rather than from above. It changes the experience entirely, and it is the reason experienced safari travellers keep coming back here rather than moving on.

On foot, at their eye level, with a guide who trained for years to take you there.

South Luangwa is also unusually rich. Leopard sightings are among the most reliable anywhere, the Luangwa river shifts course and leaves oxbow lagoons that concentrate game, and the park holds the Thornicroft's giraffe, a subspecies found in this valley and nowhere else.

On the southern border, Zambia holds half of Mosi-oa-Tunya — Victoria Falls — shared with Zimbabwe and inscribed by UNESCO. The Zambian side gives you the closer, wetter view and, when the river is low, the swim at Devil's Pool. Entry is straightforward: Indian passport holders can normally obtain a visa on arrival, which makes Zambia one of the easier African safari countries to plan.

What makes it different
Walking safaris Developed in South Luangwa and still the country's signature.
Leopards South Luangwa offers some of the most reliable sightings in Africa.
A giraffe found nowhere else Thornicroft's giraffe lives only in the Luangwa valley.
Half the Falls The Zambian side of Mosi-oa-Tunya — closer, wetter, and home to Devil's Pool.
Visa on arrival Normally available to Indian passport holders, with an e-visa alternative.
Serious guiding Zambian guide training is regarded as among the most rigorous in Africa.
Who it suits
Travellers who have done a vehicle safari and want something more involving.
Anyone whose priority is leopard.
Walkers — this is the country that does it best.
Falls visitors wanting the closer, wetter side.
Travellers who would rather not arrange a visa months ahead.

Best Time to Visit

When to go to Zambia

The Falls and the safari want different water levels, which is the central tension in planning a Zambia trip.

Jun–Oct
Dry season
The safari window. Game concentrates on the Luangwa river, walking safaris operate, and vegetation is thin. Later in this window the Falls run lower on the Zambian side — which is what makes Devil's Pool possible, but reduces the spectacle.
Best
Mar–May
High water
The Falls at their most dramatic — huge volume and spray that can obscure the view entirely. Good for the Falls, harder for game viewing, and many walking operations have not yet opened.
Good
Nov–Mar
Emerald season
Rain, thick green vegetation and dispersed game. Several Luangwa camps close and roads become difficult. Superb for birds and for photography, but not a first safari.

How to explore

How to Explore Zambia

5 ways into Zambia — drawn from this guide, not from a list that could describe anywhere.

🗺️
Where to go in Zambia

South Luangwa · Victoria Falls, Zambian side · Lower Zambezi · Kasanka & the bat migration — the parts of Zambia this guide covers, each with its own reason to go and its own time of year.

✨
What Zambia is for

Walking safaris · Leopards · A giraffe found nowhere else · Half the Falls — what this country does that its neighbours do not, and the reason to choose it over them.

📅
When to go

Jun–Oct is the strongest window — dry season. The rest of the year splits into Mar–May · Nov–Mar, and they are not interchangeable.

🧭
Getting around Zambia

Internal flights · Light aircraft · Road transfers · Walking — how people actually move around here, which decides how much of the map a trip can hold.

🛂
Getting in

On arrival or e-visa. Indian passport holders are not visa-exempt, but are normally eligible for a visa on arrival — up to ninety days for tourism.

Entry & Visa

Zambia entry — usually on arrival

Indian passport holders are not visa-exempt, but are normally eligible for a visa on arrival — up to ninety days for tourism.

Zambia lists India among the nationalities that may obtain a visa on arrival, for up to ninety days for tourism and thirty days for business. Zambia has also run an e-visa service since 2014, and applying in advance is the more predictable route if you would rather not depend on a counter after a long flight — particularly if you are arriving late or connecting straight to a charter. Confirm the current position with the Zambian mission or the official e-visa service before booking.

The Falls and the safari want opposite water levels

The Falls are at their most spectacular from around March to May, when the safari is at its weakest. The dry season from June to October gives the best game viewing, and a lower river — which is when Devil's Pool can open. You cannot have both at their peak; decide which matters more before choosing dates.

The KAZA UniVisa does not cover Indian passports

The KAZA UniVisa is a joint Zambia–Zimbabwe visa, obtained on arrival, which also allows day trips into Botswana at Kazungula. It costs USD 50 and is valid for up to 30 days within any twelve-month period, covering multiple visits between the two countries in that time.

Crossing to the Zimbabwean side

Many travellers see the Falls from both countries. That is a separate entry to Zimbabwe with its own requirement, so plan the crossing deliberately rather than treating it as a day out.

Confirm before you travel

Visa-on-arrival arrangements are set by Zambia and can be amended without notice. Only the Zambian mission or the official e-visa service can confirm what applies to your passport and your dates. We do not publish visa fees here.

It is not open to Indian passport holders. Zambia's Department of Immigration publishes the list of eligible nationalities and India is not on it, so an Indian traveller needs a Zambian visa and a Zimbabwean visa separately, and should budget and plan on that basis rather than expecting a single document at the border. Eligibility lists do change — confirm your own position with the Department of Immigration before you book.

Live Traveller Handles Your Visa

For all Zambia journeys we design, we prepare your complete visa documentation package — the forms, the supporting documents, the sequence of submission. Our visa specialists help travellers prepare complete applications with careful document guidance. Final visa decisions always remain with the relevant authorities.

What you need
Passport valid at least six months beyond your intended departure, with blank pages.
Confirmed return or onward ticket.
Proof of accommodation — normally your camp or lodge booking.
Evidence of sufficient funds for the stay.
A yellow fever certificate if your routing requires it — check the countries you transit, not only Zambia.
On arrival, or in advance
The visa on arrival is issued at the port of entry and needs nothing arranged beforehand beyond your documents. The e-visa exists for travellers who prefer certainty before departure, and it is the sensible choice if you are connecting immediately to a light aircraft or arriving outside normal hours. Zambia does not publish a guaranteed e-visa turnaround that we are willing to repeat, so apply early rather than to a minimum, and confirm the current requirement before you travel.
What you will eat
Nshima The staple — stiff maize porridge eaten by hand with relish, meat or vegetables. Every Zambian meal is built around it.
Camp dining On safari most meals are in camp: cooked breakfasts before a walk, brunch on return, and dinner under canvas. Standards are high and portions generous.
River fish Bream from the Zambezi and the Luangwa appears widely and is worth ordering.
For vegetarians Straightforward in camps given notice, and nshima with vegetable relish is naturally vegetarian. Declare it at booking — remote camps provision ahead and cannot improvise.
Water Camps provide filtered water. Carry a refillable bottle; many camps have eliminated single-use plastic.
Getting around
Internal flights Lusaka to Mfuwe for South Luangwa, and to Livingstone for the Falls. This is how the country is normally covered.
Light aircraft Camps in the Lower Zambezi and remoter Luangwa are reached by charter, with strict soft-bag luggage limits.
Road transfers Possible between Lusaka and the parks but long. Most itineraries fly and use vehicles only within the parks.
Walking Within South Luangwa, walking is a mode of travel rather than an activity — that is the point of coming.
Travel Tips

What to know before you go

Do's
Choose your season deliberately — The Falls peak around March to May; the safari peaks June to October. Trying to have both at their best is the commonest planning mistake here.
You will get soaked at the Falls — On the Zambian side in high water the spray is torrential. Take a dry bag for cameras and phones; a poncho is not enough.
Walking has a minimum age — Camps set their own limits and children are often excluded from walking safaris. Check before booking a family trip built around walking.
Malaria precautions apply — Zambia is a malaria area, with risk highest in the wet months. Take medical advice well before you travel.
Yellow fever depends on your routing — A certificate may be required based on the countries you pass through before arrival. Check the whole route, not just the destination.
Don'ts
Devil's Pool is not always open — It depends entirely on river level and is normally a low-water proposition. Never book a trip around it — treat it as a bonus if conditions allow.

FAQ

Zambia — common questions

You are not visa-exempt, but India is listed among nationalities eligible for a visa on arrival — normally up to ninety days for tourism and thirty for business. An e-visa is also available and is the more predictable option if you are arriving late or connecting straight to a charter. Confirm with the Zambian mission before booking.
It is a joint Zambia–Zimbabwe visa obtained on arrival, costing USD 50 and valid for up to 30 days within any twelve-month period, and it also allows day trips into Botswana at Kazungula. You cannot use it on an Indian passport: the Zambia Department of Immigration publishes the eligible nationalities and India is not among them, so you will need separate Zambian and Zimbabwean visas. Confirm with the Department before you book, as eligibility lists change.
They want opposite conditions. The Falls are most dramatic around March to May at high water; the safari is best June to October when game concentrates and walking operates. Decide which matters more, because you cannot have both at their peak.
You walk in a small group with a guide and an armed scout, usually in the early morning, and approach animals on foot at their level. It is slower and quieter than a vehicle, and the emphasis shifts from ticking off species to tracks, birds and behaviour. South Luangwa is where it was developed.
Only when the river is low enough, which is normally in the later dry season. It depends on conditions and is closed when the flow is unsafe. Do not build a trip around it.
Yes, particularly if you want walking and excellent guiding rather than the highest possible animal count. Pairing South Luangwa with the Falls makes a well-balanced first trip.
How to Travel

Zambia for every
kind of traveller

Most trips pair South Luangwa with Livingstone for the Falls, connected by a short internal flight.

🚶
South Luangwa
4 nights

The birthplace of the walking safari and still the best place to do one. Oxbow lagoons left by the shifting Luangwa concentrate game, leopard sightings are exceptional, and the valley holds Thornicroft's giraffe, found nowhere else.

→Walking safaris with a guide and an armed scout
→Among the most reliable leopard viewing in Africa
→Thornicroft's giraffe is endemic to this valley
💦
Victoria Falls, Zambian side
2 nights

Mosi-oa-Tunya — "the smoke that thunders" — shared with Zimbabwe and UNESCO-inscribed. The Zambian side puts you closer and considerably wetter, and when the river is low it opens Devil's Pool on the very lip of the drop.

→UNESCO World Heritage Site, shared with Zimbabwe
→Devil's Pool only when the river is low
→Livingstone is the base
🛶
Lower Zambezi
3 nights

Canoeing past elephant on the riverbank, tiger fishing, and game viewing from the water with the Zambezi escarpment behind. A completely different rhythm from the Luangwa and the best pairing with it.

→Canoe safaris on the Zambezi
→Excellent for elephant and hippo
→Pairs naturally with South Luangwa
🦇
Kasanka & the bat migration
Seasonal, 2 nights

For a few weeks around November and December, millions of straw-coloured fruit bats gather in a small patch of swamp forest at Kasanka — one of the largest mammal migrations anywhere, and almost unknown outside specialist circles.

→Roughly November into December
→One of the largest mammal gatherings on Earth
→Very seasonal — confirm dates before planning
