Overview

The city below the Seven Hills

Tirupati is a city in Tirupati district of Andhra Pradesh, and the base for the Sri Venkateswara temple on the Tirumala hills above it. Incredible India describes the Tirumala hills as the Seven Hills, with the Balaji temple on the seventh peak, and calls Tirupati one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in Hinduism. Millions of pilgrims come each year, so a visit here is shaped less by sightseeing than by queues, booked slots and rules. The temple at Tirumala is run by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, usually shortened to TTD, which also runs accommodation, buses and the two footpaths to the hill. TTD's own booking portal sets out the services it offers: special entry darshan, sevas, accommodation and darshan for senior citizens and differently abled pilgrims. In the city itself the Govindarajaswamy temple stands in the centre, and the district site says the town grew around it. This page sets out what we could confirm from TTD's own pages and other official sources, marks what rests on press reports, and says where to check on the day. We do not give fees, clock times or waiting times, because they change, and TTD's pages are the place to check them.

What a visit holds

  • Before the sanctum TTD's Do's and Don'ts ask pilgrims to bathe, wear clean clothes, observe silence and leave offerings in the hundi

Travel Intelligence

What to know before you go

Seven points shape a visit to Tirupati.

Booking darshanUse only TTD's official portal

TTD's official booking portal lists special entry darshan, sevas, accommodation and darshan for senior citizens and differently abled pilgrims, and releases slots in monthly quotas well ahead. On 6 November 2026 it showed special entry darshan for January 2027 as already completed. TTD's release of 1 September 2026 says it has identified 249 fake websites and registered cases against middlemen, and urges pilgrims to rely only on official TTD information. We state no fees and no waiting times, so check the portal for the current position.

Dress codeTraditional dress

TTD's dress code page says traditional dress was introduced in 2013, first for pilgrims taking part in Arjitha Sevas, and is now extended to pilgrims seeking VIP break darshan and to general pilgrims on the paid darshan tickets. For men it names a dhoti or pyjamas with an upper cloth. For women it names a saree or half-saree with a blouse, or a churidar with pyjama and an upper cloth. The page lists these categories, so check the portal for the dress rule for the darshan you have booked.

Rules at the templeTTD's Do's and Don'ts

TTD's Do's and Don'ts ask pilgrims to book travel and accommodation well in advance, to wear clean clothes and observe silence in the temple, and to wait their turn in the queue. They say not to wear footwear in and around the temple premises, not to wear helmets, caps, turbans or hats inside the temple, not to wear flowers at the temple, not to eat non-vegetarian food, drink alcohol or smoke while in Tirumala, and not to approach touts. They also say weapons are prohibited and that licensed weapons must be declared at the Alipiri check point.

DevicesDrones and smart glasses banned

TTD's release of 1 September 2026 says drones, smart glasses and other recording devices are strictly prohibited in the Tirumala temple area, for security and privacy, and that special checks take place at the Alipiri and Srivari Mettu checking points. Other items and luggage rules vary by darshan type, so check TTD's current guidelines before you go.

The footpaths and wildlifeCheck TTD before you walk

TTD describes two stone footpaths to Tirumala, from Alipiri and from Srivari Mettu, with luggage that can be left at the foot and collected at the top, and asks pilgrims to choose the pedestrian routes in view of their health. TTD's own pages give different lengths for them, so we state none. A TTD release of 18 July 2026 says TTD and forest officials reviewed wildlife movement along the Alipiri footpath, with a focus on protection from wild animals, and proposed an emergency response team and a study of whether pilgrims should be allowed on the two routes only until an evening cut-off. That cut-off was a proposal to study, not a confirmed rule, so check TTD's current guidance before you walk, and consider travelling in a group.

Crowds and festivalsPlan for a busy temple

TTD says it makes special preparations for major occasions such as Vaikuntha Ekadasi, Rathasapthami and the Srivari Brahmotsavams, when large numbers of devotees visit. Press reports say TTD cancelled VIP break darshan on several days in 2026 because of heavy rush. We give no dates and no waiting times, so check TTD before you plan around a festival.

WeatherHot in April and May

Incredible India's monthly temperatures for Tirupati show highs of about 31 to 34 degrees Celsius from December to January, 40 degrees and above in March to May, and about 38 to 39 degrees in July and August. Plan for heat and for long periods standing outdoors in the queue, and carry water.

Where to Stay

Choosing where to base yourself

Where you stay in Tirupati decides how long the journey to the hill takes and how you book. We do not name properties.

In Tirupati city

  • The city has the railway station and the bus stands, and the Govindarajaswamy temple is about a kilometre from the station, according to the district site
  • Staying in the city makes the early start for the hill simpler, because the buses and the footpath base are reached from here
  • Ask how far the place is from the station and the buses at the hour you will travel

TTD accommodation

  • TTD runs accommodation at Tirumala and at Tirupati and lists it on its official booking portal
  • The portal releases rooms in monthly quotas well ahead, and a notice on 6 November 2026 showed the January 2027 quota released on 24 October 2026
  • Book only through TTD's official portal, because TTD warns against middlemen and fake websites

Before you book

  • Book early around major festivals, when TTD describes much larger crowds
  • Confirm check-in and check-out arrangements if you arrive on an overnight train
  • Ask how the place helps with transport to the hill and back
Practical

Practical notes

A few details that keep a visit simple.

At the temple

  • Wear the traditional dress TTD describes, and take off footwear before the temple premises
  • Carry only what you need, because TTD's Do's and Don'ts say not to carry much jewellery or cash
  • Be ready for long queues, and carry water and sun protection

Getting about

  • Use TTD's buses or the other public buses to the hill, or a taxi that is allowed on the ghat roads
  • Allow extra time on festival days and weekends, when roads and queues are busier
  • Agree a fare in advance or insist on the meter for any local transport

Staying alert

  • Use only TTD's official portal and official channels for darshan, accommodation and sevas
  • Do not pay anyone who promises darshan or rooms outside TTD's own system
  • If you walk, check TTD's current guidance on timings and wildlife before you set out
