Guwahati
Assam's largest city on the Brahmaputra — the gateway to the Northeast, with Kamakhya Temple, river cruises and the roads to Kaziranga and Shillong.
Guwahati
Guwahati is the largest city in Assam, on the banks of the Brahmaputra, and the main gateway to the Northeast. Most trips to Kaziranga, Shillong or further east pass through it, which makes it a natural place for a night or two at either end.

What Guwahati is for
One day covers the essentials; a second adds the river and the outskirts.
In the city
- Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill. The approach involves some walking uphill.
- Assam State Museum for the history, inscriptions and culture of the state.
- Umananda Island, a small island temple to Shiva, reached by boat on the Brahmaputra.
- A river cruise in the evening; several short sunset trips run from the city.
If you have a second day
- Sualkuchi and the Madan Kamdev temple are listed as outings on the government tourism itinerary. Check opening arrangements locally.
How long to give it
Temple, museum, river
Kamakhya Temple in the morning, the State Museum after lunch and a Brahmaputra cruise at dusk.
Island and outskirts
Umananda Island by boat, then Sualkuchi or Madan Kamdev before the onward road.
Onward
Kaziranga and Shillong are both a long half-day drive away.
Arriving & getting around
The city is spread out; plan on taxis for the temple and river.
Getting there
- Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is 18.2 km from Kamakhya railway station and 22 km from Guwahati railway station, per the Airports Authority of India. Prepaid taxis, app cabs and ASTC buses run from the airport.
- By road, the Assam government gives about 210 km (around 4 hours) from Guwahati railway station to Kaziranga (Kohora). Shillong is a long half-day drive.
Kamakhya Temple
- Darshan hours are set by the Maa Kamakhya Devalaya and change on festival days. Check maakamakhya.org on the day.
- A free general queue and a paid special-darshan option both exist, and special darshan is booked through the Devalaya's online portal.
Plan around Ambubachi
One annual event changes the temple visit completely.
The temple closes to devotees for several days, and special darshan is suspended around it. The dates are announced each year.
The Devalaya has cited heavy rush in moving special darshan booking online. Expect queues at busy times; a free general queue and a paid special option both exist.
How to be a good guest
Kamakhya is an active place of worship first and a sight second.
Etiquette
- Dress modestly, remove footwear where asked, and follow the rules posted at the temple, including those on photography.
- Be ready for crowds and queue discipline at festivals.
Insider tips
- Check the Devalaya website for hours and any closures before you go.
- Book special darshan only through the official portal.
- Keep a night in hand on either side of Kaziranga so a late flight or delayed road does not cost you a safari.
