Why South Goa

South Goa is the half people move to on their second trip. The sand is wider and emptier, the buildings are set further back, the economy is resort-led rather than shack-led, and the price reflects all of it. It is also where Goa's inland goes — the Salcete villages with their Indo-Portuguese houses, the Ghat edge at Mollem, and the falls at Dudhsagar — so the south is not only the quieter coast but the better base for everything that is not a beach.

Five days in South Goa

Day 1

Land and stop

Arrive and go no further than your stretch. Dabolim is the southern airport and much the closer of the two; if you have flown into Mopa, expect a long transfer.

Day 2

The beach, properly

One full day on the sand with nothing planned, which is what the south is for. Swim between the flags and walk the length of whichever beach you have chosen.

Day 3

The Salcete villages

Chandor and Loutolim inland — the great houses, the churches and a village lunch. Understand that access to any one house is at the family's discretion and plan the day so no single door has to open.

Day 4

Dudhsagar or the Ghat edge

In season, the Forest Department jeep from Kulem to the falls. Outside it, Tambdi Surla and Mollem instead, which are open when the falls are not.

Day 5

The far south

Cabo de Rama for the cliff, then Agonda, Palolem or Galgibaga depending on how empty you want the last day to be.

Common questions

If what you want is markets, nightlife and something to walk to, then honestly yes, and the north is the right answer. The south is for people who want the beach itself to be the entertainment and are content that dinner may mean the resort or a short drive. That is a real preference and it is worth being clear about before booking rather than after arriving.
On most days it feels calmer, and it is the same Arabian Sea with the same rip currents. Beaches here are flagged and patrolled exactly as they are in the north, there are drownings on this coast every year, and in the monsoon every major southern beach is red-flagged with swimming banned. Swim between the red-and-yellow flags and treat any description of a Goan beach as simply calm as a description of one day.
Palolem is the postcard — a tight crescent with seasonal hut villages, more places to eat, and more people. Agonda is longer, quieter, has fewer options at night, and is a protected turtle beach with the restrictions that come with that. If you want somewhere to walk to after dark, Palolem. If you want the beach to be the point, Agonda.
No. Private vehicles are prohibited inside Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary and the only permitted access is a registered jeep from Kulem, within a morning entry window. The railway-track walk that appears in older guides is banned and runs on a live railway. The jeeps are also suspended for the entire monsoon and resume only when the Forest Department reopens the gate, usually towards the end of October, so check before planning a day around it.
Possibly, and it cannot be arranged. Nesting is nocturnal, runs roughly November to April, and is legally protected — the Forest Department cordons sections of sand and restricts light and noise for exactly that reason. There is no guaranteed sighting and no operator can honestly sell one. What you can rely on seeing is why the beach is so undeveloped.
Dabolim (GOI) is the southern airport and 30 to 60 minutes from most of this coast; Mopa (GOX) is in the far north and can be over two hours to Palolem. Since airlines are split across both and the split changes, the only thing that matters is which airport your specific flight uses. Confirm it before booking a transfer.
Not in the sense that Karnataka or Kerala means it. Cotigao and Mollem are real forests with real animals and no comparable safari infrastructure, sightings are unlikely, and Bondla is a small zoo and deer park rather than a sanctuary experience. Go into these forests for the forest. If a big-cat safari is what you want from the trip, Goa is the wrong state and saying so is more useful than selling you a jeep.
