Overview

Why Jharkhand

Jharkhand is a plateau state of forest, rivers and waterfalls, and it draws two quite different kinds of visitor. Pilgrims come to Baidyanath Dham at Deoghar, one of the twelve jyotirlingas, and to the Jain hill of Parasnath; others come for the falls around Ranchi and the hill town of Netarhat.

Highlights

What Jharkhand is for

Waterfalls and a hill town, and two pilgrimages.

Ranchi and its waterfallsRanchi has the Rock Garden, Tagore Hill and the Pahari Mandir, and is the base for the falls. Hundru Falls drops about 98 m (322 ft) on the Subarnarekha river, according to the Jharkhand government. Dassam Falls, about 144 ft, and Jonha Falls, where rappelling is offered, are roughly 40 km from the city.
NetarhatKnown as the 'Queen of Chhotanagpur', a hill town in Latehar district, 145 km from Ranchi by road, noted for its sunrise and sunset views.
Deoghar and Baidyanath DhamBaidyanath Dham is one of the twelve revered jyotirlingas and a major Shaivite pilgrimage. In the Shravan month, in the monsoon, thousands of devotees walk about 100 km carrying holy water to the shrine. Trikut Pahar, with a ropeway, and Nandan Pahar are also in Deoghar.
Parasnath HillA hill held sacred by the Jain community. It is a pilgrimage place, not a sightseeing stop: a 2023 Environment Ministry memorandum protects its sanctity, tourism and eco-tourism activity there was stayed in 2023, and the Jharkhand High Court directed in May 2025 that the memorandum be enforced. Check the current rules before planning any visit.

When to visit Jharkhand

A plateau with hot summers, a monsoon that fills the falls, and a pilgrimage calendar that shapes some months.

Apr – JunHot. Ranchi maximums reach about 40–41°C, and Deoghar about 42–44°C, per the same figures.
Jul – SepMonsoon. Maximums ease to about 32–36°C. The falls are usually fuller after the rains, and the Shravan pilgrimage to Deoghar falls in this season, so expect crowds and check transport and road conditions.
Getting around

How to travel Jharkhand

Ranchi is the usual gateway; the other bases have their own access.

By air

  • Birsa Munda Airport at Ranchi (IXR) is the main gateway for the waterfalls and Netarhat.
  • Deoghar Airport (DGH) serves Baidyanath Dham. Incredible India also lists Patna (PAT) and Gaya (GAY) for Deoghar.

By rail

  • Ranchi Junction (RNC) and Deoghar Junction (DGHR) are the stations for those two bases. Check the current timetable for your service.

By road

  • The waterfalls and Netarhat are reached by road from Ranchi. Check the road distance and time for your own route, and avoid forest roads after dark.

Before you go

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs said in July 2026 that no district is currently classed as affected by Left Wing Extremism, while security and development support continues in some districts. Anti-Maoist operations and IED incidents were still reported in 2026 in the Saranda forest area of West Singhbhum district, so avoid forest areas there and check the Jharkhand government's and the district administration's current advice for anywhere you plan to visit.
