Overview

An estuary at the southern edge of Kerala

Poovar lies at the southern tip of Thiruvananthapuram district, roughly 30 to 35 km from the city. Kerala Tourism puts it at about 35 km, and another guide gives 27 km. It is the place where the Neyyar river meets the Arabian Sea, forming an estuary that is most striking in the monsoon, when the river carries sand and mud down to the coast. Behind the estuary lie backwaters lined with mangroves, home to birds such as the kingfisher, Brahminy kite, night heron, egret and cormorant, and a fishing community whose customs add to the character of the place. A golden-sand beach on the sea side is accessible only by boat, which keeps it quieter than the main beaches along the coast. Nearby are the Azhimala Siva temple, Vizhinjam harbour and Kovalam beach. The sea along this stretch is subject to swell alerts, so this page sets out the position and what to check before you go near the water.

What a stay here holds

Poovar is about water, and most of the day is spent on a boat or beside one.

🛶 The backwaters by boat

  • Boating trips through the mangroves are offered, and Kerala Tourism says they can be arranged at nominal rates

🏖️ The boat-only beach

  • The golden-sand beach is reached only by boat, according to Kerala Tourism
  • It is quieter than the road-access beaches, with views of the sunrise and sunset
  • Take care near the water: the sea along this coast is subject to swell alerts, so follow local guidance and do not enter the water against advice

📍 Around the estuary

  • The point where the river meets the sea and the lake and the beach come together is a draw in itself
  • The Azhimala Siva temple, Vizhinjam harbour and Kovalam are short drives away

Four points shape a stay at Poovar.

The sea needs respectSwell alerts occur

Beach activity has been halted during such alerts, and an older report describes visitors swept off the beach strip by strong waves. Check INCOIS and the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority for alerts, follow local guidance and do not enter the water against advice.

Kerala Tourism describes the golden-sand beach as accessible only by boat. Confirm the boat arrangements, the return time and the weather before you set out.
