Chembra Peak

The highest peak in Wayanad at around 2,100 m, climbed for the heart-shaped lake set into the ridge partway up. It is a steep, exposed grassland climb rather than a forest walk, and entry is capped by the forest department — this is the one Wayanad sight that needs checking before you plan a day around it.

  • Base at Meppadi, about 15 km from Kalpetta, roughly 40 minutes
  • A car with driver is needed — no useful public transport reaches the base
  • Tickets and compulsory guides are arranged at the forest office at the base
Best time

When to visit

Because it never closes, Chembra Peak rewards the early and the late. Arrive at sunrise (or after sunset, when the gates are lit) for empty tunnels and soft light. Mid-morning to afternoon is shoulder-to-shoulder at the lower gates — but the crowds thin dramatically beyond the Yotsutsuji viewpoint, so keep climbing for the shot and the silence.
