Agatti
The way into Lakshadweep — the only airstrip in the islands, a reef-ringed lagoon, and the base for onward boats in the fair season.
Agatti
Agatti lies 459 km (248 nautical miles) from Kochi and is where almost every visitor arrives: it has the only airstrip in Lakshadweep. It is a small, inhabited coral island with a large lagoon, and a practical base for the first days of a trip.

What Agatti is for
The pace is set by the lagoon: swimming, boat rides and quiet time.
On the island
- The lagoon for swimming and snorkelling in calm water inside the reef.
- Water sports through the administration's sports unit on the island, which lists glass-bottom boats, masks and other equipment. Availability varies, so ask on arrival.
- Walks and village time on an island that is lived in, not purpose-built for visitors.
Nearby islands
- Thinnakara, about 8 km north-east of Agatti, appears on the administration's tourism pages. Whether you can visit depends on permit and package.
- Scuba diving is run from Kavaratti, Kadmat and Bangaram, not Agatti.
How long to give it
Arrive
The flight from Kochi takes about an hour and a half. Settle in and walk to the lagoon.
Lagoon day
Swimming, snorkelling or water sports, depending on what the sports unit has available.
Onward or home
In the fair season, boats link Agatti to Kavaratti and Kadmat; otherwise fly out. Keep a buffer day: weather can change flights and boats.
Arriving & getting around
There is one practical way in: by air from Kochi.
Getting there
- Kochi is the gateway to Lakshadweep for tourists. The flight to Agatti takes about one hour and thirty minutes, and the island has the only airstrip.
- From Agatti, boats run to Kavaratti and Kadmat in the fair season, October to May. In the monsoon a helicopter transfer from Agatti to Kavaratti is offered, subject to availability.
Entry permit
- Everyone needs an entry permit to visit Lakshadweep, Indian citizens included. The administration lists its e-permit portal and its tourism society as routes; the process and timing vary, so start well before your travel dates.
When to visit
The lagoon is calm all year, but the sea around it is not.
Boats run between islands and the sea is calmer. March to May is the hottest stretch, at roughly 25–35 C with 70–76 per cent humidity.
Boats are not allowed outside the lagoon because of the violent sea. The reef keeps the lagoon itself calm. Helicopter transfers replace boats, subject to availability.
Average annual rainfall, per the Lakshadweep administration.
How to be a good guest
Agatti is a home, not a resort.
Respect
- Dress modestly away from the beach and follow local courtesy and the rules your host explains on arrival.
- Ask before photographing people.
Insider tips
- Apply for the entry permit early and carry the confirmation and ID.
- Leave a buffer day before an onward connection; flights and boats follow the weather.
- Check the airline's baggage limits before you pack.
