Mumbai
India's largest port city on the Arabian Sea, once seven islands, known for Gateway of India, CSMT, Marine Drive, Elephanta and a national park inside the city limits.
A city of seven islands on the Arabian Sea
Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra and sits on India's western coast, where, according to Maharashtra Tourism, the district covers about 603 square kilometres. The city grew from a cluster of seven islands, and the tourism department traces its recorded history back to Ptolemy around 150 CE, to conquest in 1534 and to 1661, when the islands passed to the British Crown as part of Catherine of Braganza's dowry. It became the capital of Maharashtra in 1960. For a visitor this history is still easy to read in the streets of the southern peninsula: the Gateway of India on the waterfront, the Victorian Gothic station now called Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, the curve of Marine Drive along the sea, and the shrines at Haji Ali and Prabhadevi. Beyond the old centre, the city stretches north through the suburbs to Sanjay Gandhi National Park, a forested reserve that lies largely within the urban area, and across the harbour to Elephanta Island and its rock-cut caves. Mumbai is also where many travellers arrive in India, because it has two international airports and is a hub for rail and road. This page sets out what we have been able to confirm, marks where sources differ, and says plainly where you should check on the day.

What a visit holds
Most of what draws people to Mumbai is within a few kilometres of each other in the south, with Elephanta and the national park as separate outings.
🏛️ Landmarks of the south
- The Gateway of India is an arch on the waterfront that Maharashtra Tourism says was built in 1924 and marks the 1911 visit of King George V and Queen Mary
- Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is a railway station in Victorian Gothic Revival style, finished in 1887, which Maharashtra Tourism describes as a World Heritage Site and which is still a working station
- Marine Drive, called the Queen's Necklace, is a curving sea-front road with a promenade that is simply walked, particularly towards sunset
🛕 Shrines
- The Haji Ali Dargah stands on an islet in the Arabian Sea, reached by a narrow causeway, and is dedicated to Pir Haji Ali
- The Siddhivinayak Temple in Prabhadevi is dedicated to Ganesha, was built in 1801 and has a complex that dates from 1993, according to Maharashtra Tourism
- Dress modestly at both, expect to remove shoes, and ask on the day about queues and what may be carried in, because we could not confirm current rules
⛰️ Caves and a national park
- Elephanta Island lies about 10 km off the coast and is reached by ferry from the Gateway of India, and its Shiva cave holds the Trimurti sculpture
- The caves are closed on Mondays, and the ferry timetable depends on the weather, so confirm both before you travel
- Sanjay Gandhi National Park, inside the city, holds the Kanheri Caves, a protected complex of more than 100 rock-cut caves about 2,000 years old, and the Forest Department says walking is allowed in the park
How a visit can run
The southern peninsula
Start at the Gateway of India, walk or ride to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to see the station, and finish on Marine Drive towards sunset. These sights sit close together, so most of the day goes on walking and waiting rather than travelling.
Elephanta
Take the ferry from the Gateway of India to Elephanta and spend the middle of the day at the caves. Check first that it is not a Monday and that the boats are running, and keep the evening free in case the return takes longer than planned.
Shrines or the national park
Visit Haji Ali and Siddhivinayak in the morning, or take a day at Sanjay Gandhi National Park and the Kanheri Caves. Avoid Monday for the park, and allow time on the road, since traffic can make short distances slow.
Getting there and around
Mumbai is reached by air, rail and road, and getting around depends on distance, traffic and the weather.
Arriving
- Mumbai has two airports, the main one (BOM) and Navi Mumbai International Airport, which began domestic flights in December 2025
- Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is a main railway terminus in the south of the city
- Roads link Mumbai to Pune, Lonavala and the rest of Maharashtra, and journeys can be long in heavy traffic
Within the city
- The suburban railway runs for about 450 km on its Western, Central and Harbour lines and carries millions of passengers a day
- Taxis and app cars are the usual way to reach the southern sights from the suburbs
- Ask your hotel how long a trip will take at the hour you will make it
By water
- Ferries to Elephanta leave from the Gateway of India
- Timings and fares vary with the operator and the weather
- Confirm on the day before you plan around the boat
What to know before you go
Five points shape a visit to Mumbai.
Heavy rain can slow trains, roads and flights in Mumbai. Press reports from June and July 2026 describe a late monsoon followed by red alerts for Mumbai and neighbouring districts, waterlogging in parts of the city, delays on the local trains and a landslide on the Karjat-Lonavala stretch of the ghats. Reports on how trains ran on particular days differ. For autumn 2026 we found only reports of light unseasonal rain and a yellow alert in the last week of October. If you travel in the monsoon months, keep your onward plans flexible and check the day's forecast.
Mumbai has its main airport (code BOM) and, since December 2025, the Navi Mumbai International Airport across the harbour. Press reports say its first scheduled international flight, to Abu Dhabi, operated on 15 July 2026, but we could not read an official timetable or a list of airlines. The two airports are far apart, so confirm the airport on your ticket.
The ferry to Elephanta leaves from the Gateway of India and the caves are closed on Mondays. Sources disagree on the first and last boats, the length of the crossing and fares, and we found no 2026 notice about monsoon suspensions. Ask at the Gateway of India or the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation on the day, and do not plan a tight connection around the boat.
The park's official page says that all activities except Gandhi Tekdi and the Kanheri Caves are closed on Mondays and over the midday lunch hour. Leopards live in the park and their territories reach the edges of the city, according to the Forest Department. Follow the park rules: no flash, no music, no alcohol, smoking or plastic, no feeding animals, and no leaving a vehicle on safari except where the guide allows it.
Maharashtra Tourism itself gives more than one date for the Elephanta caves, and we found no agreed figure for the daily numbers on the local trains. We therefore give no ferry times, fees, opening hours, inscription years or ridership figures, and we use approximate wording where a figure is needed.
Choosing where to base yourself
Mumbai is long and narrow, and where you stay decides how much of the day goes on travel. We do not name properties.
The southern peninsula
- The area around the Gateway of India, the station and Marine Drive holds most of the older sights within a short distance of each other
- A base here suits a first visit, and the Elephanta ferry leaves from the Gateway of India
- Rooms in the south are often smaller for the price, so ask about size and noise
The suburbs and the airport side
- Staying near the airport suits a late arrival or an early flight, and the suburban railway can still take you south
- Distances in the suburbs are large and road traffic is heavy, so ask how long the journey to the south takes at the hour you will make it
- The newer airport at Navi Mumbai is on the far side of the harbour, so check which airport your flight uses before you choose where to sleep
Before you book
- Ask whether the hotel can arrange a vehicle to the Gateway of India for the ferry
- In the monsoon months, ask what the hotel does when roads flood
- Confirm check-in and check-out arrangements if you arrive on an overnight flight
Practical notes
A few details that keep a visit simple.
Getting about
- Allow extra time on roads at any hour, because traffic in Mumbai is heavy
- The suburban railway is very crowded at peak hours, so avoid it with large bags
- Agree a fare or insist on the meter before you set out in a taxi, and keep small notes for the journey
At the sights
- Dress modestly and be ready to take off shoes at shrines
- Ask before photographing people, and note that photography is restricted at some places
- Carry water and sun protection for the walk along Marine Drive and the steps at Elephanta
Weather and timing
- Check the forecast in the monsoon months and keep a spare day
- Confirm the Elephanta ferry and the Monday closure before you set out
- Carry the identity documents you travelled on, since some places ask for them
