Manipur
Read this first: the Inner Line Permit and the conditions reported in Manipur, for Indian visitors, as of November 2026.
Manipur right now
Indian citizens from outside Manipur can travel to the state with an Inner Line Permit. Manipur has also seen ethnic violence since May 2023, with fresh incidents reported in 2026. This page sets out how the permit works, what has been reported and when, and what the state is known for, so you can decide for yourself. It is not a trip-planning guide, and we do not suggest an itinerary.

What Manipur is known for
Facts from Incredible India. Check current access and conditions before planning any visit.
What has been reported
Dated reports from Indian sources. Conditions change quickly, so check the current position before you travel.
How to get there
Most visitors arrive by air at Imphal. Roads have been disrupted by blockades.
By air
- Imphal's Bir Tikendrajit International Airport (IMF) is the gateway. Travel guides report flights from Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati on IndiGo, Air India Express and Alliance Air. Check the airlines for the current timetable.
By rail
- The permit portal lists a counter at Jiribam Railway Station. Check Indian Railways for current services, and do not assume a train to Imphal.
By road
- Blockades on the two main highways, NH-2 and NH-37, have recurred, including in January and June 2026. We could not confirm the current position, so check before travelling by road.
The permit
- According to the state's permit portal, every Indian citizen from outside Manipur must obtain a valid Inner Line Permit before entering. Tourists use the Temporary Permit, valid for 30 days with no renewal, which needs a government photo ID. Apply on the official portal (manipurilponline.mn.gov.in), which has an instant option using Aadhaar and an OTP, or at the permit counters at Imphal Airport, Mao Gate and Jiribam Railway Station or a Deputy Commissioner's office. The portal also lists a self-service kiosk, so check whether it is operating. Check the portal for fees.
- Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit instead; check the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Before you go
- Check the current curfew or prohibitory order of the district magistrate for every district you plan to visit, the notices of the Manipur Home Department, your airline, and local news. Avoid areas where violence has been reported, including the hill districts named above.
