Where the town spends its evening

Police Bazar — Khyndailad in Khasi — is one of Shillong’s historic neighbourhoods and its commercial centre, and it is where the town gathers after dark. It is not a monument and does not pretend to be one: it is streets, shopfronts, food and people, and the reason every Meghalaya itinerary ends the Shillong day here rather than at another sight. Shillong carries a music culture out of all proportion to a town of its size, and this quarter is where you find out what is on.

No. Police Bazar, or Khyndailad, is the commercial centre and the evening quarter. Ïewduh — Bara Bazar — is the town’s biggest market and a working produce and goods market with a quite different character. Visitors are usually sent to the first and often enjoy the second more.
Because it is where the town actually is in the evening, and because Shillong’s music culture is unusually strong for its size and this is where you hear about it. It is a quarter rather than a sight, and after an afternoon of a waterfall and a viewpoint that is a deliberate change of register rather than a filler.
