Puducherry
Four former French enclaves on two coasts, administered as one territory. For travellers it comes down to Puducherry town: a shuttered seafront quarter, an ashram, and Auroville just over the boundary.
Why Puducherry
Puducherry is not one place on the map but four. The territory’s government describes it as the former French establishments of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam, which lie scattered across South India. Puducherry itself, the capital, is on the Coromandel coast with Tamil Nadu on three sides. Karaikal is about 130 km further south on the same coast. Yanam is an enclave on the Andhra coast, and Mahe sits on the Malabar coast, surrounded by Kerala. Nobody tours all four. A trip to the territory means Puducherry town, usually reached by road from Chennai with Mahabalipuram on the way.

Where to go in Puducherry
One guide is written for this territory: Puducherry town, which is where almost every visit begins and ends. Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam do not have guides here.
What Puducherry is for
What the territory is for. All but the last are in or beside the capital, and the last is a matter of knowing what you are not going to see.
When to visit Puducherry
The capital has a warm, humid coastal climate — the district gives a mean annual temperature of around 30°C — and, unlike most of India, gets its main rain at the end of the year. The India Meteorological Department groups Puducherry and Karaikal with Tamil Nadu, where October to December is the chief rainy season. Mahe and Yanam follow the weather of Kerala and coastal Andhra instead.
How to travel Puducherry
The territory has no single way in, because its parts are hundreds of kilometres apart. For the capital, the answer is Chennai and a car.
By air
- Chennai is the practical gateway. The territory’s government puts Puducherry about 135 km from Chennai airport.
- Puducherry airport is a small domestic airport; the district site lists flights to Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Check what is operating before relying on it.
- Mahe is reached from Kerala; the government gives it as about 70 km from Calicut airport.
By rail
- Puducherry has its own railway terminus. The district lists daily trains to Villupuram, Chennai and Tirupati, with less frequent services to more distant cities.
By road
- The district administration calls road the best connection. From Chennai the usual route is the East Coast Road, with Mahabalipuram roughly 100 km short of Puducherry.
- Karaikal is about 130 km south of the capital on the same coast, through Tamil Nadu.
- A car with driver suits the Chennai–Mahabalipuram–Puducherry run, because the stops on the way are the point of it.
Locally
- The French Quarter and the Promenade are walked.
- Auroville and Chunnambar need a vehicle. At Auroville, private vehicles stop at the Visitors Centre and the Matrimandir viewing point is reached on foot or by the free shuttle.
A first Puducherry route
Mahabalipuram, on the way
Break the drive from Chennai at the Pallava monuments — the Shore Temple, the Five Rathas and Arjuna’s Penance. This is Tamil Nadu, not the territory, but it belongs on the same road.
Puducherry town
The French Quarter on foot, the Ashram in its visiting hours, and the Promenade each evening once the traffic has been stopped.
Auroville or the backwater
A morning at Auroville for the Matrimandir viewing point, or the boat from Chunnambar to Paradise Beach, before the drive back to Chennai.
