Lachen
A village in North Sikkim at about 2,700 m, governed through the Dzumsa and the staging point for Gurudongmar Lake at about 5,430 m.
The village below Gurudongmar
Lachen is a village in Mangan district, North Sikkim, at about 2,700 m, and the staging point for Gurudongmar Lake at about 5,430 m. It is the home of the Lachenpa community, who govern the village through the Lachen Dzumsa, a traditional council that Sikkim law recognises. Visits depend on permits, army permission, snow and the road, and permits have been suspended after landslides more than once. This page sets out what is known, with dates, and what to check, so you can plan with realistic expectations.

What a stay here holds
Lachen is a base for one excursion, and the village and valley are the rest of the visit.
🏔️ Gurudongmar Lake
- A high lake at about 5,430 m, a figure given by the Government of Sikkim and cited on Wikipedia, held sacred by Buddhists, Sikhs and Hindus according to guides
- The excursion is conditional: permits, army permission, snow and your own condition decide on the day, and it can be refused
- There is no medical facility at the lake, and the nearest is at Lachen, about 65 km away
🏘️ The village and the valley
- Walk the village road and the river in the morning, and notice the Lachenpa homes and prayer flags
- Ask before photographing people, and follow local guidance
- Look up the valley at the peaks and the river, and notice how the road follows the gorge
🌅 Early starts
- The excursion usually begins before dawn, so an early night matters
- Dress for cold, wind and thin air
- Turn back if you feel unwell, whatever the plan
How a stay can run
The long drive north
The road from Gangtok follows the Teesta valley through Chungthang, a long day that conditions can lengthen. Rest and go to bed early.
Gurudongmar, if allowed
Leave before dawn if permits, army permission and the weather allow, and be ready for the excursion to be refused or cut short.
Back down the valley
Leave with a margin, because landslides and permit changes have disrupted this road before.
Getting there and around
Lachen is reached by road from Gangtok through Mangan and Chungthang, and visitors travel with a registered operator.
From Gangtok
- A long mountain drive north along the Teesta valley
- The road passes Chungthang, where landslides have stranded visitors more than once
- Allow a full day and a margin for delays
Beyond Lachen
- The road to Gurudongmar is rough, and parts are repaired in phases according to reports
- An army checkpoint is reported beyond the village
- Winter snow can close the road
On the ground
- The village is small and can be covered on foot
- The lake is reached by vehicle with your operator
- Arrange vehicles and permits in advance
What to know before you go
Four points shape a trip to Lachen.
North Sikkim is described by Sikkim Tourism as a restricted area watched by the Indian Army, with permits mandatory and issued through registered operators. Reports describe an army checkpoint beyond Lachen, snow closing the road in winter, and Border Roads Organisation and state road repairs in phases. Foreign nationals face extra restrictions, and sources disagree on how far they may go.
Permits for North Sikkim were suspended after landslides in April 2025, and permits for Lachen and Lachung were suspended in May 2025. Permits for Lachen and Gurudongmar reopened from 9 March 2026, and about 200 tourists were stranded at Chungthang in late March 2026. A flash flood in October 2023 damaged roads in this area.
Lachen is at about 2,700 m and the lake is more than twice as high. Acclimatise first, drink water, take medical advice if you have heart or lung conditions, and do not take young children to high altitude without advice. Turn back if symptoms persist or worsen.
The Dzumsa is a traditional council led by an elected headman called the Pipon, recognised in the Sikkim Panchayat Act. Reports describe contested elections and a split in the Lachen Dzumsa in 1999. Visitors should follow local guidance.
