Doddabetta
The highest point in the Nilgiris at 2,637 m, about nine kilometres from town — a road runs to the summit, and the range view is a morning thing before the haze fills in.

Doddabetta is the highest mountain in the Nilgiris at 2,637 m, and the third highest in South India after Anamudi and Meesapulimala. It sits about nine kilometres from Ooty and a road goes all the way to the top, which is why every itinerary that gives Ooty a sightseeing day starts here — it is the one view that puts the rest of the plateau in order. On a clear morning the range runs away west and the Coimbatore plain lies out to the south-east. By the middle of the day it is usually gone.

Getting there
Nine kilometres from town on a metalled road, and a short walk from the car park.
From Ooty
- About 9 km east of the town by road
- Private car is what every itinerary uses; the last stretch is steep but surfaced
- A short climb on foot from the parking area to the summit platform

- It pairs naturally with the botanical garden on the way back into town

The view is a function of the hour more than the month.

- Haze usually builds through the middle of the day
- Cloud can close the summit entirely at any time of year

- Clear mornings are most reliable outside the monsoon months
- It is cold at 2,637 m in any season — a warm layer is not optional

On the day
- Go early. This is the single most repeated instruction across the Ooty itineraries
- The temperature at the summit is well below the town — carry the layer up

- The view is weather, not a guarantee; a closed-in summit is a normal outcome
