Mathura Vrindavan
Twin pilgrimage cities on the Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh, the heart of Braj Bhoomi, with ghats, the Gaudiya temples of Vrindavan, a museum and day trips to Govardhan and Barsana.
Twin cities of Braj Bhoomi
Mathura lies on the west bank of the Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh, about 145 km from Delhi and about 56 km from Agra, according to the district site. Incredible India calls it renowned as the birthplace of Lord Krishna and one of Hinduism's seven holy cities, and says that Mathura and its twin city Vrindavan form the heart of Braj Bhoomi. UP Tourism adds that the city grew on the river under the Mauryas and became a centre of trade and learning under the Kushans, with a Buddhist sculptural tradition that the museum still shows. Vrindavan lies a short drive away, and the district and UP Tourism give about 10 to 15 km, so sources differ. Around the two cities lie other places of the Braj pilgrimage, among them Govardhan, Gokul, Barsana and Nandgaon. A visit combines river ghats, many temples, a museum and, for some pilgrims, the long parikramas that the district describes. This page sets out what we could confirm from the district administration, UP Tourism and Incredible India, marks what rests on other reports, and says where to check on the day. We give no fees, clock times or festival dates, because they change, and the temples' own notices are the place to check them.

Getting there and around

What to know before you go
Seven points shape a visit to Mathura and Vrindavan.
Timings, queues, dress and photography rules differ from temple to temple and change with the season and with festivals. We found no official page that sets them out for the main temples, so we state none. Follow the instructions at each temple and ask your lodging, and expect to remove footwear at the temples.
UP Tourism describes Lathmar Holi at Barsana, the Charkula dance and the Raasleela as part of Braj's culture, and the district describes parikramas that fall on holy days. Festival days bring crowds, closed roads and higher demand for rooms. We give no dates, so check the current calendar before you plan around one.
The district describes the Brij Chaurasi Kos Parikrama as about 252 km over seven days, the Govardhan parikrama as about 21 km, the Vrindavan and Mathura parikramas as about 15 km each, and shorter ones at Barsana and Nandgaon. It lists the days on which each is usually made. Walking long distances in the heat needs planning, so check the route and the season before you set out.
The district gives Vrindavan as 12 km from Mathura in one place and 15 km in another, and UP Tourism gives 15 km. It gives Agra airport as 46 km in one listing and about 58 km in its text. We give ranges, so ask your transport provider for the current journey time.
The district describes the Government Museum as one of the leading centres for the study of Mathura's art. It gives no opening days or fees on the pages we read, so check before you plan a day around it.
The district site names Mathura Junction and Mathura Cantt, regular buses, Agra airport and Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, with Delhi about 145 km and Agra about 56 km away. Check current trains, buses and flights, because we state no schedules.
Incredible India's monthly figures for Mathura show highs of about 25 degrees Celsius in January, about 41 in April, and about 45 in May and June, with about 36 to 42 degrees in the monsoon months. Plan for heat, carry water, and allow for long periods outdoors.
Choosing where to base yourself
Mathura and Vrindavan are close, and most visitors choose one as a base. We do not name properties.

- The district site names Mathura Junction and Mathura Cantt as the stations
- A stay here suits an arrival by train and day trips to Vrindavan and the Braj villages
In Vrindavan
- Vrindavan holds the Gaudiya temples and the Kesi Ghat, and the district describes about 4,000 temples, ghats and lakes there
- A stay in Vrindavan shortens the walks to the temples and ghats

Practical notes

- Agree a fare in advance or insist on the meter for any local transport
- Ask your lodging how long a journey will take at the hour you will make it
In the heat
- Carry water and sun protection, especially from April to June
