A grid city, lit

Sapporo was laid out on a rectilinear grid in 1869, and from Mount Moiwa on a clear night that plan is legible in light — long straight avenues running to the horizon, the dark wedge of Odori Park cutting across them, and the Ishikari plain beyond. It is a very different night view from the harbour cities: not a bowl but a plane. Getting up is part of it, with a streetcar to the foot, a ropeway up the lower slope and a small cable car for the last stretch to the observation deck at 531 metres. There is a restaurant at the top and a planetarium, and in winter the whole thing is done in deep snow.

Sapporo is a grid city on a plain, so from Moiwa you see straight avenues running to the horizon rather than the curved bowl of a harbour town like Nagasaki or Kobe. It is a flatter, more geometric view, and Odori Park cuts a dark line through the middle of it.
A streetcar to the foot of the hill, a shuttle to the base station, a ropeway up the lower slope and a small cable car for the last stretch. It takes a while and the changes are part of the outing.
It is arguably best then — the air is clearest and the snow-covered city under lights is striking. It is also genuinely cold on an exposed deck, so dress for standing still outdoors in a Hokkaido winter.
It closes for wind and weather more often than people expect, and for maintenance periods. Check before travelling out. The Sapporo TV Tower on Odori is a much smaller but reliable indoor alternative.
