Mount Moiwa
The wooded hill on the city's south-west edge, reached by cable car, from which Sapporo's grid reads as a plain of light.
A grid city, lit
Sapporo was laid out on a rectilinear grid in 1869, and from Mount Moiwa on a clear night that plan is legible in light — long straight avenues running to the horizon, the dark wedge of Odori Park cutting across them, and the Ishikari plain beyond. It is a very different night view from the harbour cities: not a bowl but a plane. Getting up is part of it, with a streetcar to the foot, a ropeway up the lower slope and a small cable car for the last stretch to the observation deck at 531 metres. There is a restaurant at the top and a planetarium, and in winter the whole thing is done in deep snow.

What to see
The view, and the way you get to it.
🌃 The observation deck
- The city grid, Ishikari bay and the plain, best after dark
🚡 The ascent
- Ropeway then a small cable car — the transition is part of the experience
🌲 The forest
- Moiwa is a protected natural forest; walking trails run up the slope
Getting there
Streetcar, then two lifts.
🚋 By streetcar
- Sapporo's tram loop runs to Ropeway Iriguchi, then a free shuttle to the base
🚡 Up the mountain
- Ropeway to the midway station, then the cable car to the summit
When to visit
A night viewpoint in a city with hard winters.
🌃 After dark
- The reason to come; go up before sunset and watch the change
❄️ Winter
- Snow-covered city under lights, and the clearest air of the year
☁️ Check first
- Cloud and wind close the ropeway more often than visitors expect
Visitor intelligence
Cold and timetables are the two failure modes.
🧥 Dress properly
- The summit deck in a Sapporo winter is genuinely severe — this is not a coat-and-scarf situation
🕗 Last descent
- Check the final ropeway down before you go up
📷 Photography
- A tripod or a rail rest; the deck is exposed and hands shake in the cold
🍺 Alternative evening
- If the mountain is closed, the beer garden is the fallback
